WTB do a 40 and a 50 (both at CRC) would neither of them do? You get 11 metres for £9-10 or so.

What rims?

I think WTB do a 45mm tape.

I did 2 runs of inch gorilla tape on my 35mm rims, overlapping in the centre.

Why do you need it? It's not usually important to tape the entire width. Traditional, yes, but it usually works fine as long as you've taped the holes

I run clear Gorilla Tape on my LB 45mm rim. The tape is 48mm wide and fits due to the central well in the rim increasing the surface's width.

So the wheels are alpkit love mud 27.5s and the rims have an internal width of 45mm.

I wondered if you needed to use tape the exact width, maybe the WTB 40mm stuff would be fine?

I've read gorilla tape is good for this but haven't tried it. I think i might give it a go.

FWIW, WTB Scrapers (45mm internal width) use the 50mm tape. As sillyoldman suggest, the added width goes into the well of the rim.

I think this will depend on the rim but with stans and lightbicycle, if you go under sized it's best to go well under- if the tape nearly reaches the edge but not quite, but is still up on the raised lip of the rim where the tyre will seat, then it'll easily get pushed over and damaged when you change tyres. Whereas if it's further over, on the lower bit of hte rim, it doesn't get squeezed in the same way.

To be fair there could very well be rims that need tape right out to the edge, I've never met them.

Gorilla tape is good while in use- sticks well, seals well. But it's ****ing awful to remove once it's been on for a while.

Gorilla Clear Repair Tape - about £8 a roll from your local DIY store. Been using it for well over a year on my carbon rims.

Avoid gorilla tape itself, any gaffa/duck type tape gets wet and eventually soaks off. And isnt air tight tobstart with.

PVC electrical tape works fine at MTB pressures, and comes in 50mm widths from screwfix etc.

Gorrilla clear repair tape should work too (not clear gorilla tape, the repair tape is the stuff you use on phone screens, car lights etc).

Aye - this one.

Doesn't leave any gunk behind when removed either.

Also works well as a frame protector tape.
