Yup, that's because 9 speed rings will work with 10 speed chains. The 2 chains have the same internal measurements and that's what counts with chain rings.

is there any difference between a 9 or 10 speed XT chainset? What I'm really asking is, can I just go buy a 10 speed cassette, mech and shifter and expect it all to work with my 2009 XT chainset?

(sorry for the thread hijack OP)

9/10 speed chainrings are perfectly interchangeable.

Ade you're asking 2 questions there:

is there any difference between a 9 or 10 speed XT chainset?
Yes, the ring sizes are different: 22/32/44 on the 9 speed, 24/32/42 on the 10 speed.

can I just go buy a 10 speed cassette, mech and shifter and expect it all to work with my 2009 XT chainset?

Yes, you can.

starsh78,

I have a 26T 9-speed steel Shimano ring for sale at £7 posted.

It is 4-bolt 104mm BCD and as good as new...

I can email a picture.

Interested?
