having run 2.35's on xc717 ( 17mm ) without problems can someone please give me guidelines on when wider rims are better and WHY ? also what are the problems of running wide tyres on narrow rims .
thanks
Bill
Stand with your feet close together and ask someone to push you over.
Stand with your feet wide appart and ask someone to push you over.
The latter is why wide rims are better.
2.35 (I'm presuming maxxis then? which come up more liek 2.1) aren't that wide, but 717's are very narrow by 'modern' 'trail' (aka marketing boloks that says the same XC we always rode is something more hardocre than it really is) standards.
Also wider rims are generaly stronger and stiffer so flex less in use and take a bigger hit to bend them enough to need trueing.
Less tyre roll.
