[#11836444]

I've put a wheel together, it looks round radially, and true sideways, but....
When I put it in the bike frame it's clearly not centred in between the seat-stays so I've tweaked it. Now it's sitting centrally between the seat-stays, but way off centre between the chain stays. 35mm gap one side, 15mm gap other side.
I've tried an old wheel in the frame and it's centred between both seatstays AND chain stays.
I dont think the frame is bent, but ou never know....
I think centring around the chain stays is wrong because one side is crimped, but I cant explain the big difference.
Any ideas where I might have messed up?

Put the wheel in the other way around and see if the gaps swap sides. If they do, it's the wheel. If they don't it's the frame.

Is it a quick release drop out? If so, make sure the axle is fully located in the drop outs.

Have you got a dishing tool?
Chain stays might be asymmetric too.

Not all frames are symmetric, put the wheel in wrong-way-around to check if it's the wheel or frame.

Check whether there axle is bent

I can confirm that it's possible to spend hours trying to "true" a wheel whose axle is bent 🙄

yes, wheel is dished correctly, in fact it's all sorted now. I should have left it alone when I was getting frustrated yesterday.
This morning it was easy to sort, the QR skewer lever was preventing the axle sitting square in the dropout.
