I've got a hankering for a new wheelset. Hope Fortus 30, Hunt Trailwide or Endurowide and Horizon V2 are in my crosshairs so that's my idea of budget. What else should I be looking at? I'm not in a huge rush luckily as there's not much stock out there at the moment.
If it matters, it will be a 27.5 rear and either a 29 or 27.5 front (not decided which way to go with the front yet)
Freehub can be HG or MS, but if HG I'd like steel for longevity.
Seem to be loads of 27.5 on eBay- tri sport resort, rm cycles and others
Been looking for 29er wheel set and everything seemed 27.5
I ended up with cobalt 1 for 200 and they seem nice, but that’s for my commuter 🙂
Hope Fortus 30 could never be accused of being light (ish) - I’d remove that straight off your list.
I’d speak to a wheelbuilder and get some like a Bitex / Pro4 / DT350 built into a DT Swiss rim.
If you decide to go mullet then the custom route is definitely the best option I reckon.
I’d you’re brutal on wheels DT EX511, if you’re just average on wheels then XM481.
I reckon SILT alloy wheels would fit the brief, available in mullet config.
Pick any two out of your three requirements and work back from there.
I've got a mullet set of Hunt Enduro wide wheels that are hardly used that I no longer need.
I've only got a Sram XD freehub though, but Hunt sell the others on their own. Let me know if you're interested as I'm going to list them this weekend I think.
I'd be looking at £250 posted for the pair.
Fortus 30 is the DH rim in the Hope range. It's heavier than the Fortus 35.
I've just rebuilt my 35W on Pro4 with DT XM481 saving at least 100g an end.
I am about to get a scrub wheel set. seemed to get good reviews on wide-open and they do mullet wheel sets.
get some bitex hubs. Then a pair of ex471 or ex511 from starbike and get them built up.
Why Bitex?
I got these for my sons bike and couldn’t be more impressed! Light, strong, tubeless ready including valves, good hub engagement and sound. Just a super clean set of wheels for the money plus extra percent off with code extra10

Eh, why? He's already outlined his [ perfectly reasonable] requirements very neatly and succinctly
Why Bitex?
Because they are cheaper than hope, dt Swiss etc but they have a good rep with wheel builders.
Personally, I'd try and pickup some 2nd hope or dt Swiss hubs and build them into dt Swiss rims.
Or just buy those hunts above and go riding.
