...that can be carried on a car roof rack?
Is there a legal limit?
.... or is just a manufacturer weight limit?
team car bike racks can often take 5 bikes and 3 extra spare pairs of wheels:

I've got the weight limit for my E46 coupe and it's pretty high at 75kg, so I'm thinking 6...if I can get the racks to fit without interference.....
I think the weight limit needs to include the rack as well.
Worth a thought if going for a big one (ooh er Mrs)
The drag must be huge on the teams cars - as above.
Bars and car both have weight limits, and then there's roof bar width and width of cycle carriers to content with. For us it's three.

although the rack may weigh a fair bit?
I always assumed that is wasn't a weight on the roof issue and that it was to gdo with the strength of the clamps holding the roofrack to the car.
I suspect that the team cars will probably have some sort of strenthening fitted to the door pillars and roof to allow it to take extra weight.....or they might just weld it on and hope for the best ๐
Weight based limit for the fixings. In practice four Thule 591s with aero bars is your limit before rack/bike interference.
