But doesn’t puncture within 5 metres of the nearest flint??
Have the 35mm standard TL version on my commuter. Light and comfy but ridiculously prone to punctures - 4 in the last 5 rides!
Any recommendations for something 32-35mm, reasonably quick rolling but with decent puncture resistance. Tan / brown sidewalls a plus!
A gravelking with tubeless sealant in it?
I also find when I get loads of punctures it means the tyre is worn out and needs replacing
Vittoria Terrenos seemed a popular option when I started a similar thread, or Specialized Pathfinder?
The new Conti Terra Speed comes in a cream sidewall (apparently, I've not seen pics yet) and I've found Conti tyres relatively reliable.
Oh, plus road.cc just reviewed a new Gravelking which is apparently more puncture proof?
My standard answer: Vittoria Revolutions.
I had wtb riddlers on my bike. I loved riding them, but I was averaging 3 punctures a week.
I got some revolutions to tide me over as they were cheap, but I’ve stuck with them.
Like Gravelkings they are fast on the road and have surprisingly sure grip off-road. Great for canal paths, dry mud and grass, wet roads, loose dirt, etc. They have zero grip on wet mud or grass: as long as you go in a straight line they work - anything else no chance.
I’ve had them on for a year and there’s still wear in them, but more importantly I’ve not had a single puncture whilst riding the same routes as the Riddlers (which looked like a sieve by the time I got rid of them).
Planet X still have good deals for them. Worth a shot I’d say.
My experience with Gravel Kings was not good. They feel like great tyres to ride, but my god, are they prone to cuts and punctures - this is from new, no question of them being worn out - they just seem to attract glass and flints. I tried adding Stan’s sealant, but that just created an almighty sticky mess as well as a flat tyre.
For the last year, or so, I’ve been running Schwalbe G-One Speed TL-Easy Evolution Folding in 30mm.
I’ve set them up tubeless with Orange sealant (Stan’s wouldn’t hold road pressures) and they’ve been great - nice to ride, fast on the road, and no sign of the P-word yet.
Yeah to clarify - these are new, so disappointing to get so many punctures. Rims aren't tubeless compatible either.
Thanks for suggestions above, I'll have a look
I've now had six punctures (three on road, four off-road) on my front tyre since last Tuesday evening. If you're having issues, I'd stay away from Conti Terra Trail's...
GravelKing Plus. It's like a GravelKing but tougher.
Anything is tougher than A GravelKing. What a flimsy tyre. I thought it'd be nice to upgrade from my trusty Schwalbe Marathon, but I was wrong. @yourguitarhero Four punctures in a month from new, hadn't had one in more than a year prior to installing the GK. I'm awaiting delivery of a Conti Contact Plus, which seems to have received decent reviews. If this turns out to be puncture-prone, I'm going back to the Marathon.
WTB resolutes, no punctures in 2 years. However they have been tubeless from the start
Always a compromise between a nice ride and punctures (Gravelking) or a poorer ride and no punctures (Marathon plus) when using tubes.
Although the flinty gravel roads I ride on cause punctures even on tubeless road type tyres so I still end up with a heavier, non supple tyre to ensure I don't get punctures as I hate getting punctures more than I like suppler tyres. Currently riding Giant Cross Cut Tour tubeless which come up at 34mm wide (stated 30) but weight a whopping 550 grams. They roll well though and no punctures in 6 months.
I had 5 cuts from small flints in my GravelKings in the first month of ownership, running tubeless.
Tedious cleaning, drying, prepping and patching the tyre itself. When I got the 6th one I gave up.
GravelKing SK’s are pathetically prone to punctures from small flints, thorns etc.

I was havign no problems with the Gravel Kings then managed three punctures in two days, none of which sealed with tubeless sealant. I went for a set of 42c Conti Contact Speeds and so far they've been good running them with tubes. The bike feels a little bit sluggish since I've changed the tyres but that's more than likely just me being a bit unfit. So far, so good, I'm pretty happy with them and I'm not normally a fan of Continental tryes.
+1 Schwalbe G One. Roll fast enough and decent off road (to a point)
Rims aren’t tubeless compatible either.
Neither are mine - Gorilla clear repair tape and a sense of adventure...
I am a big fan of the conti travel contact. Run them on commuter / utility bikes for years with almost no punctures and I just put a set of 26x2 on the tandem for an upcoming tour and tried them out yesterday. Very impressed on 40 miles of mixed riding. Good grip and not too draggy on tarmac, rideable offroad
Wow! I was really interested in reading that article, but I'm amazed they have given the Riddler 'Best in Test'.
I loved the feel of mine and they were great to ride, but:
a)They punctured so often I got rid of them after two months
b)They nearly broke my fingers getting them on and off the rim (and I had plenty of practise - see a)).
I find it hard to believe they gave it 4.5 stars for 'puncture protection', as I've since met a few others who had similar problems to mine.
They give the Riddlers a great review, and I agree with pretty much all of it except the puncture bit, so go for them if you like the idea ... just don't be surprised if you spend a lot of time by the side of the track.
I've had very few problems with Gravelking SK's, the GK slicks were an another story...
The Vittoria Terreno Drys mentioned above are very similar. I've gotten about one puncture per year with GK's, and so far none with the Terrenos.
Rolling speed is similar. The Vittorias corner better on loose or soft surfaces, but are a bit indistinct when leant over on tarmac.
Has anyone measured the width of their Terrenos? Am torn between those and the Gravel Grinders, but can't go wider than 38mm (actual).
Ta
I think that Grand Fondo test was flawed in that all tyres used the same pressure. So the thin tyre came out most comfortable
been running the gravelking sk 40mm on my CX commuter bike for the last few years, theyve taken a hammering on and off road and deal with thorn punctures easily, as long as i keep the sealant topped up.
@13thfloormonk - I've had 31, 33 and 35 mm versions and they've all been about 2 mm over the stated width on a 19 mm internal rim, so the 35 mm should be good for you.
Edit: For me the difference is in the cornering: GK's are better on hard surfaces and Terrenos everywhere else, so it's about where they're going to be ridden.
