➡ 64 nipples to be supplied and replaced by bikeshop to an existing wheelset
Got a set of wheels with coloured alloy nipples that I would like to change for something more robust/subtle.
Any experiences?
No one?
You'll be looking at approx a tenner for the nips, and about £25 per wheel rebuild cost.
yep I was told £25 (+nipples for you) for a complete dissembly and re-assembly by my LBS, to completely sort a wibbly wheel.
It's going to be dispropotionatley expensive as it's pretty much the same work as a new wheel build.
Wheel build - spokes + nipples + extra labour removing old nipples.
Might be cheaper to let them fit new spokes for the time they'd save cutting them out.
Why not change the nipples yourself and then just pay for a true?
I imagine it would be more expensive than either a new wheel build, or a re-spoke, as in this case all the spokes need removing carefully not snipping off.
And if any of those alloy nipples have "frozen" into the rim it could be a real PITA. You'd be better dismantling it yourself and just asking the shop to build it for you.
Thank you guys.
Being a bit dim I guess I could change the nipples myself and ask for a re true?
Or am I missing something? Not following on the "rebuild" comments>
Would I just need to get the correct length nipple for the correct gauge spoke?
i think nip lenghts are standard. its the spokes that are different lenghts (correct me if i'm wrong please).
Go with Druidh or Onzadog's suggestions of replacing the nips yourself then bring it to the bike shop for a true-up. Prolly save yourself a few quid to boot.
It seems I could buy enough DT brass nipples for about £10 so I guess if I did the switch over it would just be the cost of a re true?
Being a bit dim today - is that what you guys mean?
yup, exactly that
If you want black I've got a big bag of black brass nips I won't use that I ought to flog!
njee20 - What length and gauge are they fella?
Standard 12x2.0mm
How much would you like for them?
DIY then get the wheel tensioned up professionally, that's what I did... Some of the nipples were seriously stuck so it did take a while but as long as you do it one spoke at a time there's no danger of ending up with it laced wrong.
