Now that I am in the world of gravel I want to discover new routes.
I want to be able to sit at home in the evening and plan a route on my laptop or download a GPX from somewhere and then ride it with GPS the next day. I like OS and would prefer to be using OS mapping if possible. GPS will need to be handlebar/stem mounted. What is the best way of doing this without busting the bank?
I use memory map with an annual sub for OS 1:25k, plan my route (very) roughly, save it and then upload to strava, and use their route planner and heat maps to quickly create the final more accurate routing. Then upload that route to whatever app for the bike (I usually save that clean route back into memory map, and synch w memorymap on my phone)
I use Strava heat maps for finding some of the trails or checking to see if they are rideable and ridewithgps for plotting and navigation
I use a Garmin 530 and Komoot. Can all be done on a phone but you could use a laptop if that's your bag.

I personally don’t find OS digital mapping gps device friendly. The image holds all the detail so zooming in/ out makes for a cluttered view on a small gps screen ( but ok on a phone). I use a source called talkytoaster https://talkytoaster.me.uk/
And it’s brill. The detail adds only as you zoom and declutters when you pull back. At full zoom it’s much superior to OS 1:25000. This works just fine for me on garmin etrex. It’s not much for the license, 13 quid I think. For route design on pc or tablet I also use an open source map bikehike.co.uk. That uses a Google map/OS combo to design your .gpx files with snap to routing. Also use the OS app on subscription but more for trail and fell running route design. Hope this helps but happy to hear about other tips.
For gravel routes I use an OS map on one screen (so I can see all the lovely detail) and the Strava route planner on another (for heatmaps, both global and my own to remember where I’ve been!) and plan the route on Strava, then send it to my Wahoo Bolt v1.
For road rides I basically just use the Strava route planner and send it to the Wahoo.
