Micromtbfixlette rides an Isla Beinn 20 and at this time of year the stock quasi SB8s and mudguards are proving problematic. What's the consensus of a good 'proper' off road tyre for a little bike?
My little rippers seem to do alright on schwalbe black jacks. They cost under a tenner from CRC.
Conti explorers are the other option.

Offspring #2 had 2" Nobby Nics on his one winter. No issues with those.
I was going to suggest maxx daddy, but they aren't really a mud tyre (knobles too close together) , but then not much will be, and will they be riding in the sort of deep mud that needs a full on mud tyre, or just a bit of slop.

Wintery Chilterns equates to plenty of slop, albeit we'd be staying away from the worst if it. As it stands though the SB8s are lacking in pretty light gloop.
Conti explorers. Similar volume to the standard SB8's so no problems with clearance. A bit heavy though as wire bead only in 20", but given its going to be ridden through clag, makes little difference.
I used Bontrager SX 2.0" to replace the semi-slicks on my daughter's old Ridgeback, they worked a treat. Fairly light XC tread tho'
