I want to make a new axle for a road bike. Can anyone tell me what sort of steel is usually used for an axle for a track bike?

Thanks

Gareth

*for those interested: I want to turn a front Hope Pro2 into a rear hub with a 16t sprocket boltedn onto the ISO disc mount. Velosolo offer a kit for doing this with an XT hub. I fancy using a Hope one, and with the appropriate cartridge bearings and a lathe, it shouldn't be too difficult.

I've got a velosolo threaded axle which is obviously of no use to you, but their website says it's EN19 high strength chro-moly steel.

I wouldn't bother messing about, just get an on-one double fixed hub which comes in 120mm or 135mm flavours for about £15. Track cogs from £5, lockrings from £1. And replacement bearings cost peanuts compared to the ones in the Hope hubs. The wheel won't have to be hideously dished either.

Would that be, like, more irony?
