I thought I had found a shimano reducer to take a standard ext bb tool down to this new xt bb standard so I bought a few as they looked to be made of warm boiled sweets.

But the don't work!

Somebody please link me to a half decent tool for the smaller bottom bracket!

I just use the supplied adapter. Never had a problem with them.

In what way didn't the adapter work?

Didn't come with an adaptor, the adaptors I bought were clearly not the right ones.

It doesn’t need to be swung off to get it tight, 3/8 is fine

Got this recently because I'd rounded out the plastic adapter thing I had been using:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bottom-Bracket-Installation-Tool-IceToolz-BB-Remover-for-BBR60-Shimano-M093-/264783927963?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49292

Not used yet. I'm hoping I've negotiated the minefield of Shimano BB standards correctly and bought the right tool...

^^^^^this'^^^^^^

Didn’t come with an adaptor

I'd be asking the retailer why, they are cheap plastic and don't last long (long enough to fit and remove said bb) but I've had a few xt bb's and they all had the adapter in the box

I use a lezyne tool that takes 3/8 or a spanner, shimanos plastic reducers have worked perfectly although a tight fit and torqued to 40nm without issue, its seems to be pot luck if you get the plastic adapter in the box or not with XT bb's, whats wrong with a 3/8 fitting, you can get step down adapters if your wrench is 1/2.
