I like the look of those Pyga 110 jobbies, no idea what weight they are though.

Is a bit of weight loss (you won't manage a lot off at £1800) and a slightly stifer rear end worth changing a bike for if you like the rest of it?

I was looking at the Segment but from what Ive read its even flexier than the 5 29

Stiffer and lighter tends to be expensiver.

Try and get a test ride on the 2016 stumpjumper fsr. Shorter back end and slacker front than the 2015 and earlier models. Could be had new for around your budget.

Is the frame itself not a pretty good weight? Oranges tend not to be heavy but it's hard to get frame weights... You'll have no trouble finding a stiffer rear end tbf.

Remedy or carbon/half carbon Trailfox? I suspect both have lighter frames but, they definitely have a lighter feel. Neither's that common as a frame though... But then Evans have a complete TF02 for £2650, 6.5lb halfcarbon frame and covered in good stuff. I think they're mostly overlooked because the RRP is absurd but they're good bikes.

It'd the wheels that make it feel flexy, carbon wheels make it absolutely fine.

tbh Though there are a couple of guys who ride 5 29's in the 'valley' and I've not heard of them complaining of flex - and they ride far far harder than you will be doing, so maybe you ought to just look at a carbon rear wheel?

Better wheels will make pretty much any bike feel better.

But as for a new bike, if you want it stiffer and lighter than the 5 29 and still a 29er you'll need to be looking at something in carbon.

I am away at the moment and back late march but going away again for another four months in may so will be looking to buy in september/october so would it be possible to get a deal on an outgoing model year bike?

I like the 5 I really do but I will be honest with myself and say Im not fit enough or even a good enough rider to get the best out of it!

I can't believe a 5 has a flexible rear. It will be your wheels. Tighten them up? Or failing that, carbon rims will make much stiffer wheels.

Yep, that is exactly the same frame as the Thumper. I'm riding it in Thumper guise and it's the stiffest bike I've ridden. They're not light, but they're built for damage and at that price, an absolute bargain. Running mine with 150mm Pikes, a slack angle bushing and headset, bringing in line with the latest geometry trends.

If it were me I'd be researching how I could get a job that allowed me to ride the bike I already have for more than a couple of months of the year.

There are a lot of people suggesting wheels, for ~ £200 maybe worth a shot at those first? Plus if its still not right you can add them onto whatever replaces it.

If you just want a change though, no one can blame you lifes too short 😀

I've ridden both and they are very different in terms of ride characteristic.

E29 shouldn't be as nimble and fun when you look at the figures. Spesh has done a great job.

I thought the orange was a hoot in a straight line, corners, not so much.
