Take up golf.
Been under a rock lately?
While it may be single pivot, it has hundreds* of bushes and bearings. I want a 'pure', same as an Orange Segment/5/Patriot/224 one pivot and four shock bushings. That is it. No more. [s]No less.[/s]
Cannondale are the closest I think.

*this may be a slight exaggeration.
Given your wish list I'd say the Evil Following looks just about perfect. Since the rear end isn't boost compatible you'll probably be any to pick the frames up for peanuts by September 👿
I've got a trailfox tf02, absolutely love it. Feels plenty stiff enough to me. There was a full carbon frame for sale on pinkbike a while ago not sure if it's still there tho.

8 bearings I think.
Secondhand Transition Smuggler will probably be in budget by September.
Possibly not that much lighter but the shorter rear end and shorter travel will make it feel peppier than the Five 29 I reckon. It feels peppier than a lot of 26ers I've ridden.
Smuggler is a good choice if you want stiffness. Coming from a 26" Five (and having had a few demo rides on the Segment) the stiffness of the rear end on the Smuggler is the defining difference for me. But you probably wont save too much weight. So, if you think that matters, you'll probably need to pony up for a carbon frame.
looks exactly the same frame, what did you think of it?
It was a very good bike, but slightly behind-the-times geometry wise now. I put a -1deg headset in from the start.
Positives - good balance of weight & stiffness and 130mm travel makes it very versatile. Suspension works well, frame and parts durable.
Negatives - I now prefer a longer bike, with a lower BB. It was great with a 650b rear wheel to lower the BB - but still a bit too short in the TT. It was a bit flexy when riding it hard but probably on par with similar trail bikes.
Nine months research for buying a bike you'll hardly ride? I think you are doing it wrong sir.
If it were me I'd be researching how I could get a job that allowed me to ride the bike I already have for more than a couple of months of the year.
I'm afraid this is life in the forces. I don't chose to be sent away for 8 months of the year. But thanks for the handy tip.
I like the look of the Enduro 29er but they seem quite rare?
Another one I was looking at when I bought the 5 29 was a carbon stumpjumper 29er.
There's been a few carbon Enduro 29er frames in the classifieds over the last couple of months.
Just thought I would post up my feelings on the bike now I've had it for a few months and finally got some decent rides in that I'd done previously on my Trance and 5 spot so I could give a proper comparison.First off... I LOVE IT
Just had to get that out of the way.So, today Ive been to glenlivet on the 5. It was my third trip there and each time on different bikes. The last time I went was on the Trance and it was that trip that sealed the fate of it as I had a horrendous time with it and came back knowing I needed a new bike.
Ok today then was a completely different outcome, come back even more impressed by the 5 and finally have found a bike that I want to keep.
A lot of people say that the 5 is a flexy beast and the 29 version is the worst of them all. On one section of trail there is a bit of a compression whilst going round a bend, on the trance I could properly feel the back end get out of shape and flex. Today however I couldn't feel any flex at all despite hitting the same section faster and harder.
The fit of the bike is almost perfect for me too. I haven't had to mess around with it much trying different stems etc. It just fits nice.
^^^^ You missed the :winky and #bantz.
+ bit mean dude
Bit mean? you have a bit of previous with Renton yourself sir!.
Not mean ,just trying to save him some money and pain.
The 5 read like the perfect bike for him after all that nonsense with the Trance,he could just store it till he needs it.
Bit mean? you have a bit of previous with Renton yourself sir!.
True but dragging up peoples previous posts is a tad low don't we feel!? 😉 There are some serial bike swappers on here - he just wants to find the one
I miss him around, this place is a lot more fun with him and his alter ego Hora 😆
Looking at what fasthaggis wrote has helped me reflect a little bit.
Its true I did feel that at the time but looking back Id just come off the Trance which for me was the worst bike Id ever owned and the Orange felt like a nice bike at the time.
Maybe I said the above wearing rose tinted specs ??
I dont want to be a serial bike swapper !!
If only the 5 was about 6 lbs lighter and a bit stiffer
If I rode as little as you say you do, I'd have a hardtail. I don't think it's a great idea getting bearings/linkages soaked, then not riding them for 8 months.
Think you're going to struggle to get something lighter and stiffer at that price. Maybe try and get a bit fitter so a burly bike doesn't feel such a chore to pedal.
I don't mind buying second hand.
about 6 lbs lighter
How much do you think a five frame weighs compared to other frames???
As above from Nobeer, I'd get a HT.
There are some awesome nu-skool geometry ones about at the moment....Stanton, the new Ragleys, PP Shan etc....spend the money on the best fork you can buy, fit awesome brakes and then don't worry so much about how little you sometimes get to ride. My Ragley handled Antur brilliantly, no doubt I'm faster on my Trance but I don't ride FS much so i tend to keep it for dry days, the HT is a brilliant workhorse in between.
Didn't someone in this country win a regional level DH or Enduro race on a HT recently?....buy wisely and the rear end of a HT these days can be as stiff or flexy as you desire.
I'd go PP Shan frame, Fox-36 forks, XT drivetrain and brakes, custom wheel build using something proven like Flow-EX rims etc, then just invert the forks for the sake of keeping the oil near the seals when you get a posting and go away for months....come home, fit forks and rip the trails again on a bike that will likely need bugger all maintenance.
Mmm maybe
However I have just built up an on one parkwood.
renton - MemberIf only the 5 was about 6 lbs lighter and a bit stiffer
You're not going to save 6lbs out of any frame so if you want 6lbs lighter, you need different kit not frame... But there's a limit to how light you can be, with a LT 29er, and have it still function.
However I have just built up an on one parkwood.
Literally or metaphorically? Just that they're rather short...
Literally.
Figures say it's 1cm longer top tube and 2mm shorter reach than 5 29. So it should be fine as a commuter/second bike.
not wishing to sound harsh, but if you were able to get fitter and lose a few stone you would achieve a bit/rider setup which achieved this ! 🙂If only the 5 was about 6 lbs lighter and a bit stiffer
You could be right ianc
^^^^ for once I probably am 🙂 Honestly though, shed a few pounds and the whole 'ride experience' will feel lighter, stiffer, will climb better....
On the Weekends ride I bumped into two riders on Meta V4's. One said he was serial bike swapper but both said since buying their V4's they haven't looked at anything else. I've had mine since March. What would I change?

House!!!
I never got on with my Five, the Patriot was abit better but then I jumped on a borrowed Blur LT and it felt like night and day around. The Meta V4 felt solid as a house compared to the lot.
No offence to Five fans but I think Orange need to focus/diversify on other suspension systems otherwise they'll shrink and ultimately disappear or be bought out.
That's a personal opinion but I can't see new aspiration customers replacing the diehard Orange fans for continual sales.
Orange need to focus/diversify on other suspension systems otherwise they'll shrink and ultimately disappear or be bought out.
So what's so much better about the suspension on your single-pivot Meta V4 than a single-pivot Orange?
From what I understand Orange sell as many 5's as they have the capacity to make so don't think they will worry anytime soon. Every time they do a different design it gets binned after a few years as every one still buys the 5 or Alpine 160. Oh, and they were bought out last year.
I have a 5 29 Renton. I changed the original Mavic/Formula tubed wheels for a posher Mavic UST/Hope tubless set up and it's made the bike far more lively as the wheels are much lighter. I also swapped the Deore cassette for a lighter XT one.
If you simply want a new bike then get one but it might be worth upgrading a few parts on the Orange first.
Renton: You need to get yourself a Liteville 301: 160mm travel, sub 30lbs, really zippy when pedalling even with the shock open but great on aggressive descents.
bloke just likes thinking about bike because he doesn't have time to ride.
even comes up with arbitrary reasons why he *needs* to go bike shopping.
fair enough, I say.
So we should see some new models soon, Blood revisited too?
I can see why Renton does it. I too do this, it helps with time but I do think there are other factors it helps cope with (underlying stress etc). Well with me it manifested itself this way.
A revised / modernised Orange Blood could be popular but I cant see it happening.
What on earth happened to Cove? I thought they were supposed to be one of the cool indipendant lot but £1700 for this

When for £600 you could get this

Cor, on the face of it what a con!
For cove hustler check chain reaction £699 currently plus 10 off
wooo, massively reduced to a price higher than others are selling the exact same frame for
I thought switchback bikes had ceased existence?
What on earth happened to Cove? I thought they were supposed to be one of the cool indipendant lot but £1700 for this
Aye, agreed, but I suppose Canadians could be sitting saying the very same about Orange?
I'm not sure the current status of Switchback / Hammerhead, my point was that Cove, once a well respected company are now knocking out frames designed and sold by others for vastly higher prices.
Switchback have shut up shop AFAIK.
Agree about Cove, weak move.
Its a pity about Switchback, slightly messy history but they seemed to be nice bikes, just a shame they couldn't keep it going forwards.
