[Closed] what to do with old bike parts?

Chains, bearings, chainrings, cranks etc. The lot of them wear out but I don't want to throw them away as there's some expensive/energy intensive alloys there, what do people do with them? Do scrap metal merchants take them?

I drop mine in the metal bin at the local tip when i go for other stuff. I'm sure a metal merchant would take them but you'd need an awful lot to get any more for them. Something like £1 per 20kg unless you can split it properly by type.

I've got a scrap box at the back of the shop and Dodgy John comes to empty it once a month. I don't get anything for it, but he makes a living and it stops metal going to landfill, which is good.
Sometimes give old bikes to charities who renovate and send to Romania or Africa.
