Took resprayed cross bike to lbs to fit the headset and just been building it up today. Front didn't feel right, took spacers, stem etc off and redid them all. Still no joy. It's a carbon steerer so I thought maybe the bung was the prob but it seemed fine. Then looked at the lower part of he headtube to discover the crown race isn't tight. At all. Completely loose and can be taken off by fingers! Still can't believe it, they must have realised in the shop surely?

Not sure what to do now, if it's the race then I can remedy it but if the fork is the prob then regardless of what happens with lbs I'm a bit rooked.

Have you used the forks before or are they new?

No they were on that bike before the respray, the headset was new to me but second hand so poss the race was oval, even so they should have realised when they tried to fit it IMHO

Apparently it's ok for a crown race to be loose.

And you can't face steel frames.

So now you know

Sounds like an lbs that CBA. Loose crown race is a big no no, surely. It'll end up doing a Chris King and making a nice groove in the steerer I'd have thought.

i asked them to order a new race, if it's loose then I said I'll apologise unreservedly (and I'll buy them beer)

Ahem, it is a king..
