As above.

Just getting peoples thoughts on whats best.

Need to replace my std Shimano ring and fancied something I didn't have to hide behind a bash guard ๐Ÿ˜ณ ๐Ÿ˜†

I run a Renthal on my 1 x 9 but thought best to check to see what other peoples experiences are.

i like my on-one stainless - did the whole winters training and strathpuffer solo - removed it - looks like new ! the rear surly cog - 18th looks fubar though - and that was even after using a 22 for the puffer !

on-one seems pretty good to me, only in 32T though... quite like velosolo's one's as well, made in the UK as well ๐Ÿ™‚

Surly. Done lots of miles on mine and it still looks as good as new.

I use a Blackspire downhill 32t ring no problems, looks good and not too expensive.

Another happy Surly stainless user here.

One complete segment of the ring was bent right over 45 degrees by Ryanair. Hammered back flat on an Italian blacksmith's anvil in 2007 and still going strong today (try that with an aluminium ring).

The Salsa ones that Charlie the bikemonger sells are going well on mine

Goldtec 34 tooth ally for me. Seems very tough. Had to have a 34 as I have old 5 arm Shimano cranks and this was the only size they had in 5 arm. To be honest though I've got an 17th tooth White Industries freewheel. I wasn't sure that my knees would take 1:1 when I started SSing. So it was actually cheaper to buy a bigger ring than another WI freewheel. You can't put a 16T or smaller on the body of the 17T or above as the internal dimensions are different. This is the change over size apparently.

Surly SS rings are made of cheese. I doubt ryanair would have bent an alloy one so badly mick_r! I've got an MRP ring now, it's lovely

Surly or Salsa. I run a Salsa currently (for the last two years almost no wear).

I've had Surly stainless, and Salsa and Blackspire DH alu ones. The Surly did bend a bit after a relatively gentle meeting with a log, but they bend back 'ok' and last forever. I like the blackspire just now, it seems to be lasting longer than the Salsa which was also good.

I've used the Surly and the On-One stainless rings. They seem to last pretty well - been used for a few 'Puffers and mudgrinding winters. Nice thing about them is they shine like new when you clean the bike.

The On-One rings look better made.

+1 for surly. they wear very well assuming they're loaded in the manner for which they were designed.
i've had mine for three and a half years, it's seen off a WI freewheel, and now it's flipped i expect to get another year out of it. ๐Ÿ™‚

I once had Goldtec alumimium ring that only lasted a few months. Stainless steel all the way ever since. My current On One ring seems to be lasting better than my previous Surly one.

Apart from ryanair I've had no problems with stainless Surly bending during riding (lots of horse gates near us with double sleepers so it does get clonked regularly). No sign of any wear after 3 years and 2 well "stretched" chains so can't be that soft...

Mrs has been running a Salsa one from CTBM with much less mileage and it is a spiky toothed mess in 2 places - but luckily being singlespeed and 4 arm crank you just file off the burrs and rotate 90 degrees to bring some fresh teeth into play (and then if feeling really frugal flip it over and repeat twice again!)

Middleburn Hardcoat unramped middle ring. Faultless so far and that's despite an almost complete lack of TLC

Just don't be nice and lend someone a chainring bolt if you ride a surly ring....

It was showing no sign of wear though ๐Ÿ˜€
