Hello all,

I'm having new wheels built for my Santa Cruz Chamleon.

I will be running 27.5 x 2.8" rubber, so ideally a 40 (ish) mm wide rim.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Alan 🙂

I'm trying to decide a similar think at the moment. Probably help to compile a list of 40mm internal rims (excluding silly price carbon ones). Off the top of my head I can think of these;

WTB Scraper i40 - 550g ~ £65
DT Swiss XM551 - 595g ~ £80 (inc Squorx nipples)
DT Swiss M582 - 610g ~ £65
Raceface Arc 40 (formerly Easton) - 595g ~ £80

I was thinking i35 is OK, if 2.8 is where you're likely to stop in term of size? Thats where I was heading to save a little weight where it matters. Probably none though, and the i40 more flexible.

I've got 2.8 and 3.0 27.5 and 29er wtb scrapper 45 and Easton arc 45 and velocity dually with 39mm internal or and a 26 65mm large marge lite with a 3.7 nate lol

I think 3.0 on 45 is ideal but the 2.8 is a little exposed not a lot but a bit. In terms of swapping around tyres the dually is better at 39mm works with 3 and even 2.4 so more versatile I'd say I had a 2.4 on a 45 and it wasn't great

Hope my rambling helps 😉

i35 with 2.8’s is fine.  Will certainly take 3.0’s but might be a bit sub optimal.  Maybe i40 F/i35 R?

Maybe i40 F/i35 R?

My frame doesn't really have clearance for more than 2.8" ont eh rear so have been thinking along these lines. Either with RF Arc40/Arc35 or WTB Scraper i40/ASM i35 (except the ASM i35 is heavier than a scraper i40!).

I have seen scraper i35s listed on OEM wheelset but no where else.

I have some halo vapour 35s and have been great they do them with 50s if you want them a bit wider

i also like the look if the spank oozy rims 395 I have 295 ones and they are by far the best rims I’ve owned

I've been very happy with my i35 rims with 2.8 and 3.0 tyres. Don't really see the need for 40 with those width tyres.

I have halo vapour 35s in my normal bike. They are not a plus rim though (35mm external not internal). Were nice to build up and have been fine in use so I'd have no worries with the 50 version in that respect. They are not as light as others though.

Don’t overlook Dually’s.

They build into a nice strong wheel.

Might not be the lightest but can’t say I’ve ever noticed any disadvantages.

45mm gives 2.8 tyres a nice profile.
