Was out today and had little stopping power and plenty of squealing despite a recent change of pads ( forget the make) any recommendations for good stoppers much appreciated.

If Shimano, I use their resin pads. Very little squealing, unless I've hamfistedly contaminated them or the caliper seals are on the way out.

More to do with the discs - drilling patterns remove the dirt, howling is not dirt as such but contamination. One turn of the wheel should result in a disc clear of mud
sounds like either you need to bed the pads in or your seals are leaking after pushing the pistons back to fit new pads
