Calling all retro bike types, can someone suggest what this frame might be, thanks.

rear end makes me think Raleigh.

It's a cheap POS, whatever it is, sorry.

A black one...

Trek something - alloy frame...perhaps a 7000? Not an alloy Trek then with rack mounts on the dropouts like that...

It's all a bit generic but it's very much like my early-90s Carrera. Same dropout/mudguard eye location, same general construction, same crosspieces in the seatstays and chainstays... Same cable guides too actually. But the stays look a bit more shaped.

Dunno, but my old Kona frame used to have the cables along the top of the top tube like that - maybe a mid noughties Explosif?

Thanks for the rapid thoughts on this. It has some elegance and I agree with toys19 but it predates on one. I was hopping that the straight seat stays and shaped chain stays would give it away. It also has one of those braze on lugs that you hook the chain on when removing the rear wheel and also has holes in the head tube where a badge has been riveted on.

i would say it would have been at the lower end as it has a brazed on seat clamp.

maybe a mid noughties Explosif

IIRC Konas had KONA stamped on the dropout where the QR would sit

Steezysix, I don't think it's a Kona because they tend it have tapered stays, rather than those chunky regular diameter tubes. I have a '94 Explosive which has a slightly strange externally ribbed tube set with very slender stays. The frame number includes 97 between some letters which I wonder if it might be the year?

Think he was just saying that they're not limited to el cheapo frames.

Though, that frame's got no canti mount. When did Vs take over? Some time after I stopped paying attention anyway...

(or, may have had it removed of course)

I have a frame which looks very similar - a Trek 930 from about 1992. Mine has "Trek" brazed on to the top of the seat stays near the seat clamp.

Pretty sure it isnt: Kona, Orange, Trek, Marin, On One.

Could be a Spesh Hardrock?

Pretty sure it is not worth being excited about!
