Looking at the on-one vandal and the titus fireline.
The vandal is a bit longer but apart from that they look the same.
So is there a difference I just can't see?

Very little, frame design appears to be a bit different, but the Fireline was out a while ago, guess they just want to jump on the hype of the scandal with a slightly newer model?

I had a fireline for a while. I don't know why but it didn't float my boat.Dull and boring when I was expecting so much.

All Planet X, On-One, Viner, Holdsworth and Selcof products carry a 2-year warranty as standard for the original owner (Titus titanium bike frames feature a lifetime warranty as standard for the original owner).

https://www.planetx.co.uk/help/warranty

If they are a similar price and similar shape then buy the Titus everytime although some will argue a lifetime warranty from planet x might not be what you'd expect.

Unless it was really cheap why would anyone buy a ti frame with just 2 year warranty? Perhaps that's just me?

I would happily have a Titus frame. I expect all ti Planet X bikes are made in the same factory so I don't know why the rest just get a 2 year warranty. Perhaps Titus are superior which is why they back them up?

Perhaps someone on here knows more?

Both the Vandal and the Rocky Road will be available as a frame only option soon. (Just enquired with OO)

Frame details for the vandal

Frame Weight, Approx, (med) (g)  TBD kg

Currently the scandal is £1199 with sram gx. The weight saving from sx to gx will offset the difference in frame weight.

That leaves you £500 to buy some decent wheels and better rubber.

Once you put 29er 2.6 tyres on you won't notice much from the frame, especially not from a cheaper end ti frame.

But raw ti frames looks amazing.

Ti or alliminium frames both come with 2 year warranties

My scandal is brilliant, can't fault it at all. It gets used more than any of my other more expensive bikes.

The Vandal looks less refined. Seatstay bridge, external cables. Probably a few other things too if you look closely. Still a fair wedge cheaper if those things aren't critical.

I’ll never buy Ti again after I recently cracked the top tube on my Ti hardtail. It wasn’t  crash damage , just fatigue.

I’m now enjoying my steel Pace 529.

I have a fireline. Great bike. Responds well when you push it hard. Pretty much gets down anything too.

Tend to use it for big days out or quick blasts that are not the lakes.

Thread resurrection time. I've been perusing the Scandal, Vandal and Fireline, and given that they're all (essentially) the same shape, and all have (essentially) the same build in GX spec, are the Ti ones worth the extra of the Scandal? Especially given that I could put the difference towards better tyres and a dropper post

Ti frames look better and you can't really scratch a raw frame. But considering paint is usually 200g give or take, a raw scandal frame might be lighter than a ti frame.

A scandal frame is easier to replace or repair but a ti frame looks better.

I have a scandal and I was really tempted to replace it with a vandal but I decided I wouldn't actually gain a lot apart from ti frames look better.

Bit of a thread bump, but I've just ordered one of the Ti Vandal frames - will share some pics once it arrives.

As mentioned by Jonba, Fireline has a 'special' seatstay bridge but in my opinion it only makes it look 'dated'. The internal cabling (Titus) for both dropper and gears/rear brake, offsets that vs the exposed cables of Vandal...specially the ones under BB!
In comparison to Scandal, I guess it's a material Ti vs alloy preference and the same applies to colour scheme (raw Ti - amazing vs paint...) but the new colours scorched hearth, neon whatnot and other, do look great 😉

Still prefer my Vandal, a proper long day work horse with chunky tires/wheels and a pure bred on some syncros/rocket Rons combo for local xc series

I've a Scandal, decent ride and does the job.

I had considered a Ti version as I've a much loved Lynskey 456Ti which I've not ridden since I bought the Scandal. But there's no weight saving and having ridden a pal's modern Ti bike they're just not built as 'comfortable' as my old one. It felt no different to an aluminium bike.

And my FS is steel and my 2 gravel bikes are alloy and carbon - so I have tried practically all options 🙂

The Fireline is a butted frame. The Vandal probably plain gauge since butting isn't mentioned. The reach figure is wrong on the Fireline chart. Actually quite a few errors have crept in on the charts. Both bikes have longer chainstays and a lower BB than the Scandal according to the charts.
The info is on the website.

Is a Vandal a Ti big dog? or are they different bikes?

Isn't a vandal a ti version of a scandal but slightly different.

I think because aluminium is easier to work with, not as specialised and cheaper the frames are a better finish than the ti vandals. Someone also thinks the geometry is different and cable routing.

If the claimed weights are reliable then there's not much in it either between the scandal and the vandal. The vandal is probably over engineered to stop warranty claims due to cracking.

Basically, if you've already got a scandal (like me) there's no point changing but if your in the market for a new hardtail then this is a bargain ti frame.

My large Vandal Ti frame (with rear axle) came it at ~1.8kg. The overall finishing and welds are very nice. Great price too.

No idea what the non Ti model weighs.

There's no mention of the Vandal being butted, but the Rocky Road Frame which is the budget Titanium Frame is described as triple butted and Frame weights are the same give or take a few grams.

I can see butting on the seat tube - if that indicates butting everywhere else I don't know.

On-one's website says the Vandal is triple butted.
Does anyone know how the Vandal would compare to a SolarisMAX?

I'm going blind, can't see any mention of triple butting?
Pretty sure it is though...

Few bits I learned during the build/weren't on the web page:

A large frame can easily take a 200m dropper, perhaps even one of those new 240mm.
The rear brake mount looks a bit odd, but can run a 180mm rotor easily (with adapter)
The frame ships with a rear axle, but without seat collar.
I used this Hope headset - Black ZS44/28.6 Type 2 / Black EC44/40 Type H
Frame can easily take a 2.6in 29 tyre, I think the 2.75in size they quote on web page is realistic

https://on-one-bikes.co.uk/products/on-one-vandal-titanium-mountain-bike-frame?variant=40785563877564

^ The above link says it's triple butted throughout.

Weight of a large frame with just the rear axle installed was 1.830kg

That explains why I couldn't see any mention of the triple butting, I was on the Planet X website (same company but different sites?). There's a lot less detail on the Planet X site.

Updating the thread to show the build I finished with a Vandal frame. Taken earlier on the South Downs.

Has anyone gone from a scandal to a vandal. I currently have a scandal and can't fault it. Much prefer it over the big dog i had.

I fancy a Vandal full build as i could do with some new forks as my ageing pikes have about had it.

For those of you who have one what are your thoughts on it? Ive checked the geo charts out and notice its shorter in reach that the scandal. Anyone on a large at 6ft? how do you find it size wise?

Thanks

@j273 are you sure the heo charts are accurate?

Maybe someone with a vandal could double check the measurements?

I'm 6ft tall on a large frame with a 50mm stem - it feels fairly close to what the geo suggests. I don't have a way to accurately measure HA etc.

I've used a Large Stif Squatch before, and that felt noticeably longer in the reach.

Well here’s mine. Medium Vandal bought in the most recent sale.
Most parts carried over from my scandal so I have got loads of parts for sale now
