When my Large Lynskey went back for repair, they welded in a new section of seat tube and a new top tube.
As the cracks in the top tube were only about 10mm long, I suspect they have cut it down and used it to repair a cracked Small frame. That's what I'd do.

Don't know about replacements. Weigh them in I suppose.

From my experience the manufacturer requires the old frame (and shock if the replacement has different one) to be returned via LBS

A friend who had a frame and shock replaced was asked via the shop he bought it from to cut out the frame number from the BB and send that to prove it was put beyond use- the warranty was agreed via high res photos

On a similar theme, working for a truck dealer, all warranty parts were sent back to the manufacturer.
The only exception was an axle beam which would have been uneconomical to transport. I cut it up and we sent pictures.

We ALWAYS request the old frame back. We'll often then return it to manufacture if they want to investigate it further or cut the bb out (so they couldn't be sold on) and recycle the alu.

There's no way they should ever be on eBay or anywhere else for that matter, after all, we've replaced them because they are no fit for purpose.

On another similar theme, there were rumours of a big stack of brand new Range Rover chassis in a scrap yard in Birmingham in the early '80s.
Apparently, they had had the gearbox mountings welded on in the wrong place and it was cheaper to scrap them than alter them.
In the days before cheap second hand Defenders became widely available, Range Rover chassis were sought after as an easy means of converting a Land Rover to coil springs.
Several people were desperately trying to get hold of these chassis. As far as I know, nobody did and they all got cut up. ๐Ÿ™

What would you do then if you suspected that a frame you have just bought is one of these "warranty replacements" would you report it or would you just leave it ?

What it is is that ive bought a 2010 specialized tumpjumper frame from ebay.

Specialized had a problem with a batch of this model in frame in large where all the laccuer was peeling of the frame and a lot of them were replaced under warranty.

The frame ive bought is a large and has the same defects as the warranty frames.

now the lad ive bought it from said it was his frame from new and that he has just upgraded but he couldnt tell me what to.

ive checked his feedback and it appears he has sold a few of these frames since the start of the year.

when i asked him about it he said he doesnt know what im on about and that the other frame he sold was his sons??

when i aksed hm about the other frames he sold he hasnt replied.

now i probably shouldnt be worried but its the fact he has probably lied to me about it all and if they are im sure he shouldnt be selling them as potentially they are "stolen" if spesh are expecting them back??

i could be totally wrong here but i just dont know.

what do you think??

This is the frame that you thought had been sold "several times"?

Sounds a bit suspicious if he's sold a few of them. Got a link to the seller?

I think you're over-thinking this

You seem to have put 2 and 2 together and jumped to the conclusion that the answer is 5

Build the frame up and be done with it.

OK then

Ring the police with the frame number and ask if it's reported stolen

If it all comes back negative, just get on and enjoy it with a clear conscience?

If you've got the frame delivered already, and the only fault is the lacquer, I'd build it up and ride it to be honest!

erm factory seconds ?

nothing at all stopping specialized selling these on to recoup losses if its purely a laquer peeling issue.....and im not saying the seller works for spesh - they may have sold them to a third party whos now sellng them on ebay !

No brand would do that, it causes too much damage to the name

Call Specialized if you are still worried.

Is this the Stumpy fsr elite you linked to the other day? Did u end up winning the auction, then?

Definitely reckon it should have gone back to Spesh as a warranty repair.

If you have paid, I would get the frame if you want it & then perhaps contact Specialized? It is only cosmetic damage.

Edit - scrap that. Just read the above replies - started writing my post, then stopped for dinner so it was a bit behind the times.
As above, just get the frame & build it up.

trail rat..

its all over the web that spesh had qc issues with the quality of the paint finish on a batch of this particular model in the large size and as such a lot were replaced under warranty.

i believe a lad on here had one replaced too.

plus the chap told me the frame he sold me was his!!

urm uplink - youd be surprised what goes on behind the scenes - i have had and certainly know a few mechanic mates that have got cheap returned bikes from distributors with cosmetic damage .....

worried over nothing . com - you got a cheap bike - if you paid alot for a cosmetically damaged frame then thats just stupid ....

"plus the chap told me the frame he sold me was his!! "

its ebay - im not saying its right but he could tell you it was owned by the queen if he really wanted to !

A friend of mine has a couple of "warranty" frames. Frames which were returned to the manufacturer as faulty (lacquer issues) but which basically are fine. The manufacturer replaced the customers frame with a 100% one but the old returns were sold off at trade to staff, family etc.

Bottom line is they were fine bar minor cosmetic issues, no point in perfectly good carbon fibre being used as landfill.

It'd be worth checking with Specialized, give them the frame number and make sure it wasn't part of a stolen batch or warranty. The guy might be legit (maybe staff?) or he may have got hold of a load of stolen or sub-standard frames...

As I said in your other thread I reckon these are being sold without specializeds blessings by either a spec or lbs employee. Not stolen but not wholly above board and if spec find out the sellers income streams may dry up...

I recently had a replacement frame from Marin/ATB sales. They sent my LBS an XC8 frame to replace my old single pivot Rift Zone frame. The LBS cut the bottom bracket shell (complete with frame number) out of the old frame to send back to ATB sales ans gave me back the frame as an ornament.
