I've just started using the gym where I work. The facilities are limited, with no squat rack, and not alot of space.

What leg strength excersices would you do? They have to be done with either body weight, dumbells or a cable machine.

My aim is to improve my power for pedaling out of corners etc.

Thanks

Weighted lunges I guess, although obviously the right answer is squat ๐Ÿ™‚

make sure you are aware of the difference between strength and power.

for strength currently doing squat and deadlift. Will introduce power exercises (kettlebells and box jumps) in the new year.

Squats, deads, weighted lunges, calf raises and RDL's are my go to.

Elevated split squat, dumbell/kettlebell swings. Single leg deadlift. Suitcase deadlift.

Bosh.

I think ill start on weighted lunges again. The weights only go up to 15 kg dumb bells, so I find these to light to challenge me with normal squats. I have to do high reps.

Thom thumb, can you explain the difference in mtb terms?

Phil Warren what do you mean by RDLs ?

Are weighted box jumps a bad idea?

Ill throw in one legged bodyweight squats.

But of course sport specific training is usually best so - interval training on the bike.

Lunges with kettlebells at the mo. PT had got me doing HID stuff on the cross trainer too. Room full of gym bunnies in desinger tracksuits (men) and make-up (women) and I'm fat lad at the back pouring with sweat on a machine that's shaking itself to bits.

Bar squats and bar deadlifts ๐Ÿ™‚

I'd also suggest doing single legged squats so as to work the glutes in isolation. With a 15kg weight in each hand you'll have to be pretty strong to not find yourself blowing after a few reps. I'd suggest resting your foot on a chair behind rather than pistol squats.

With regards to dumbells, you can do lots of different squat exercises and stiff legged deadlifts. All of these will hit your glutes, hamstrings and quads.

Don't forget to focus on core strength as well. Planks, mountain climbers ..
