Sick of riding the Peaks every weekends but I can't stand trail centres. I want to explore more now.
Bare with me- I'm a total Luddite at this. If I draw a route on a map and then upload to a mobile GPS device is this possible?
Could I use a downloaded app to my phone?
I know the route, can trace the route but don't want to the hassle of going 'wrong' off the map alone.
Budget GPS recommendations and software to use thats 'idiot' proof? ๐
I'm not baring anything for you.
Plot route on your computer (or even on a smartphone/tablet) via mapmyride or one of many other websites/apps
Save as GPX file
Upload to phone/GPS
Follow on phone/GPS
Second hand Garmin 605 or similar will show you maps and your planned route to follow. Simpler/cheaper GPSs will just show you your route (as a line to follow, no map underneath). Both work.
Always take map and compass when you go out to the wilds, else you'll be in the brown stuff if the phone or electronic device dies on you miles from civilisation. I believe you Northern types use distance from Greggs as a measure of this or is that just Binners?

You could just use the map, highlight (or remember) the route on it and download one of the many Grid Ref apps to your phone. That way, if you do go wrong, you can place yourself on the map really easily and you haven't got the constant high battery usage that comes with 'tracking' apps.
Most of the time you'll be following obvious tracks and paths anyway, and nearly every junction is at a gate or wall or something equally obvious, and usually signposted, so it's tricky to go wrong really.
Anymore/any bargains online?
