What dynamo light?

Thinking about a dynamo front light for the winter. Choice seems to boil down to two, both of which appear to have downsides (Exposure Revo, which doesn't have an on/off switch, and Supernova Triple, which has a silly quick release mount but non-detachable power and rear light cables, and is apparently a bit flickery at low speed). Anyone any experiences, or any alternatives?

I've got the Revo, and whilst the no on/off is a little irritating, it's a great light.

Wouldn't it be quite easy to rig up a simple switch?

Look at the B&M range on Rose bikes. Loads to choose from, I've got the Lumotec Senso Plus which has a decent beam, automatic on/off in low light and a "stand light" which means it stores energy as you move and stays lit for a short period for stopping at lights, etc. It does flicker at very low (below walking) speeds, but I think that happens with most dynamo lights. Was about £35, no need to spend a huge amount.

But won't an inline off switch just put the stand light on? I've been thinking about this issue as I am also thinking about dynamos and lights etc. haven't seen the perfect setup yet....

Plenty of choice on rose bikes; just remember that most are designed to mount on the fork crown, so for handlebar mount, you may need to get creative or have a dip in somewhere like S J S's selection of brackets
This one has a USB charging facility and is under £55.

For road use or off-road?
On road the Axa light linked above is mostly great. I have one, the beam cuts off like a dip beam but covers the road really well. You won't see signposts or low branches though. No real use for proper off-road.

The charge is held by the light, not the hub; a switch won't help.

Sorry - should have said for off-road. The range of on-road lights is much, much broader.

Does anyone know if you can get a cheap chinese head unit to work from a hub dynamo? A search reveals 'dynamo' lights from chinese suppliers, but would these work? The Revo is great but pricey, and many of the cheaper B&M ones are too road-oriented.

Klite are supposed to be good but i still think they look like they specced the cheapest naffest looking connectors in the maplin catalogue.

They do have a somewhat industrial look. 🙂

It's a pity someone like Troutie (is he still making lights?) won't take on a dynamo light.

Hugely impressed with the beam pattern and output of Paul78's Klite. Helpful guy behind the products too.
