… the cross shaped adjuster betwixt crank and BB.
WIll it help me tame the intermittent creak from my BB?

BB bearing pre load adjuster. Won't help creaking unless it's caused from being loose.

It turns to adjust the preload on the bearing rather tha. Useing the silly little plastic shims
You can try to tighten it a little to remove the creak but probably needs either some bearings or the cups are moving I the frame

Dunno but the XTR BB on my mtb has a tensioner/retainer type thingy that eliminates play in the crank. Not sure why but the xt and slx don't.

Because XT and SLX have a preload cap on the end of the crank instead.
