Currently have a very cheap and not at all cheerful rigid fork, don't know the spec but it feels terrible. It's too short (bike originally had 100mm sus forks) but more importantly is incredibly jarring over anything rougher than gravel.

Don't want to do anything more than ride some bridleways on my commute but at the moment it's pretty horrible.

Don't want to spend much, maybe 60 quid tops.

Any suggestions please?

Just to answer my own post, the answer is - better handlebars. Fitted some Mary Bars and now getting much less vibration and shock through the bars, plus loving the hand position. Cheap as chips too, love 'em.
