it'll take a shimano cassette, but it only relies on the single large cassette flange to engage the freewheel direction rather than on more common freehubs where the splines are thicker to engage the cassette face on all splines both forward and in reverse rotation.

it would make it easier to put the casette on, but would also allow you to put a cassettte of separate cogs on with the ramps in the wrong place so it wouldnt work properly....
