Mrs P got a Boardman Fi Comp back in the summer, which is good value and nicely sorted. Be careful that the Halfrods sales monkey doesn't try to flog you an XL though, as they are wont to do.
All the bikes are bit different though, Specialized do various different shapes... have her swing her leg over a few and see what feels good (oo-er missus)
At 5'5" she won't need women-specific! If you can triple your budget, I'm selling a rather nice one that will fit perfectly as I'm the same height! 52cm Scott btw.
