What bike for my Dad?

My Dad is late 60's and quite enjoys cycling, but hasn't done it regularly or years. A couple of years ago he bought a Giant hybrid thing with an adjustable stem, racks etc, but doesn't get on with it and now says "It looks like an old man's bike". I have informed him that he is/soon will be an old man...

I'd like to get him out riding more as the benefits would be many fold, and it's something we could do together. I think what he needs is a rigid 29er (back roads here are horrific on the whole) with a good spread of gears and relaxed geometry. Budget, not BSO, but £1,000 MAX, I will try to sell the Giant for him to go towards it.

Ideas, please.

Or

The Ribble has a suspension fork if the roads are that bad, and a pretty good spec.

A secondhand ebike of some description. That will reinvigorate his love of bicycling.

Perhaps for consideration, Pure Electric Flux One from a reputable online seller for £800

We love our one for city rides and country lane bimbling with around 25 miles of range

The caution I’ve mentioned before, if you were interested, is to double check the warranty situation as Pure have ceased production of e-bikes and now focus solely on escooters

For us it’s a simple bike, with few parts to go wrong, and has been a joy in use

Vitus Substance V-2 Sora?  Flat-bar and drop-bar options and it's a gravel bike so perhaps less likely to be perceived as an old man bike.   Rack options as well though if he needs that for a quick run to the shops.

And a few on ebay so you may be able to get a GRX option in budget.

My father (85) just bought one of these:

Its 650b, not a 29er though. He is swapping the stock tyres for WTB Byways set up tubeless.

If his current bike is for old men.

Get him a paw patrol bike from Argos.

OP... hope you find a good solution for your dad. As an old-timer myself I so value the ability to get out on my bike and the freedom it gives me. Although I'm in a different position to your dad in that I'm a long time rider I know your dad will get so much benefit from getting out there. If he can ride with you occasionally I'm sure he would love that.... I certainly do when I ride with my son... I just say " see you at the top (or the bottom) - whichever applies.

This.

I've got a Boardman hybrid 8.9e for sale on behalf of my dad (also in his late 60's) if you're anywhere near the SE, currently at £1200 but tbh I think £1k would get it.

Hmmm.  I thought I was pretty fit for my age but last week I was handed my arse on a plate by my 40 year old son.  Who was beaten by my 13 year old grandson!

I'm trying to ration my ebike to one ride in three because while I get out a lot on it, I'm losing some fitness.  But I do have three other nice leg-powered bikes to chose from.

If he doesn’t want an old man’s bike then maybe an Airdrop Fade or some kind of BMX 😜.

failing that some kind of ebike hardtail. I thin Haibike and a fe2 others do reasonable priced ebikes

Nice thinking @zerocool

Perhaps what is needed is a real niche option

How about an electric, 29 inch, BMX, with gears for £1099 ?

GT POWER PERFORMER 29" FREESTYLE BMX E-BIKE

I am much impressed by recent posts asking for suggestions for bikes for mums and dads. Even though I am an old bloke I am still handing over bikes to my sons , both in their 40s. Most recently a carbon road bike to the oldest who only wants it to go to work on.

When are they going to buy me one? I have obviously been too generous!
