OK my deisel 406 has spat oil out through the water bottle, which spells head gasket and witht he mot due on the 4th I'm thinking of getting rid.

So I need a replacement, big estate, was thinking Jap like a handa accord, lots of 04/05/06 ones on autotrader for 3/4/5K. Or is there anyhting else I should consider?

PS anyone want a scrap 406 estate?

Ford Mondeo would be my pick at that budget. But, you're not far off the starting price for a decent, but old/high milage, Volvo V70 as well.

accord nice, i nearly did, but you've got to look at mondeos, the hatch's are big but the estates are huge. 130 tdci are good but the petrols are nice as well, my father gets 39mpg from his 2l petrol. and he likes to "make good process".

Not sure where you are toys, but I'm selling my 2007 Mondeo Edge 130 2.0 TDCI Edge estate in the next couple of weeks. 92,000 motorway miles. I'm the second owner. It's ex-lease with full printed service history. It's the very last of the Mk3's (June 2007). Looking for £4000, based near Edinburgh.

Highly recommend one. It's fast for an estate. You get 50-60mpg and it's boot is massive for bikes/kit.

Passat TDI, or Mondeo, the accords are good but seem to be quite rare in the diesel estate version.

Answering the phone, Paul, is... a little like making love to a beautiful
woman. In that you've gotta... lift the receiver, put it to your ear,
speak... loudly and clearly... oh, yes - and don't forget to state your
name.
😀

Just another though Citroen C5 HDi estate, huge inside and you would get a newer car for your money.

I can recommend a Mondeo. We have a ST TDCI Estate and it is brilliant.
Plenty of space and goes well too. ST TDCI are above £4k for a good one still, but seems like you will get a good 130 TDCI engine within budget.

mondeo is cheap as chips to run. I had an older volvo that was not. Suspect many of the other brands also end up being expensive.

I'd also suggest mondeos. If you don't do huge mileage then get a petrol and a much nicer/newer car for your money. And they have less to go wrong if you plan to keep it til it dies.
