[Closed] What are the best sounding rear hubs

I fancy getting some new wheels, who makes the best sounding hubs? I know that I'm being shallow and the clicking noise a rear hub makes is not a valid reason to base a purchasing decision on. Just thought I'd ask. 🙂

I like the noise of a pro2 as it helps people to realise your behind them.

My chris king sounds like your being followed by a swarm of angry bees !

Chris King's look nice as well. Don't think I'll get one of those past her in-doors though 😀

Anything noisier than Shimano is just really irritating if you ask me. One of the many great features of the bicycle is that it is near-silent - why anyone would spend money to make that not so is beyond me.

Shimano. Anything noisier implies it's broken.

campag

no good for you but they sound like a swarm of angry hornets, and they go and go and go and go

the Ringlé on my Demo 9 also sounded rather sexy

I rode my LX hubbed commuter I built over winter for the first time, I couldn't quite work out what was wrong with it but it felt wrong, till I realised that when I was free wheeling it was silent....

So you can get too used to the racket!

What about Superstar ones? they boast a lot about the number of pawls etc. any one used them, or is it a case of you get what you pay for.

I love the sound of my Crank Brothers freehub - a nice purr that isn't too loud, but enough to keep me smiling. Its a bit louder than a Chris King and a bit quieter than a Hope.

S'funny, I always associate a super quiet freehub with one thats either faulty, or has too much/too heavy grease, and is about to potentially fail.
Give me a noisy freehub anyday- why are you spending so much time freewheeling anyway?
While they're not the best hubs by any means (or the most reliable freehubs either), I always liked the metallic sounding click of higher-end Mavic wheels.

why would anyone want their hubs to make noise? do you like your brakes to squeal too?

If it's making noise then you've stopped pedalling!

GW, have a re-read of the first sentence in my above post.
I'm totally f***in' paranoid about having the smoothest running, quietest bike, 🙂
My one happy concession is to a nice working-sounding freehub.

I must admit going out with a pro2 rear the other day made me realise how much of a slacker I am in that it definitely lets you know when you aren't pedalling!

One of these sounds far more like a King but is British!
I've got a Pro 2 on the 2nd bike but you can't beat the more subtle buzz of a Bulb.

I love a Hope Bulb for DH clickyness but on relaxing trail rides on the HT I prefer the Deore silence.

Are pro3's supposed be louder than pro2's?

Dt Swiss 240's (in oversized ex1750 varient) sound nice.

The DT internals in my traversees, most of the time they make no noise at all. Perfect.

THE nicest noise from a hub is that of an XTR hub when you spin the axle. There's no play, but you can hear the bearings clicking over the top by their weight alone.
I'm sure the noise of my Hope XC is just loud enough to bother people when I'm freewheeling along while stuck behind them.
To my ears pro 2s sound broken though.

Best on a Sunny summers evening in the Wyre forest with my mates all using King hubs, sounds like a swarm of bees

When I want people to know I'm coming I shout at them, then they have two choices move or get hit. Old people or young also handicapped or odd looking I let off!

As for best sounding hubs. Single track is bad for going on about looking at bikes and people showing off their rides.

But now we have reached a whole new level of genius, listening to bikes, why not record the sounds and download them into a yamaha or similar keyboard. Then you can listen to what ever sound you like and with a beat of your choice.

OOH sweet music to my lugs!!!

How many of you have listened to your hubs tonight???

Not tonight as I was listening to other people's while fixing bikes all day.
I was, however, listening to the Magic Roundabout theme while reading your reply just now.

While I like the Hope sound for 'buzzing' riders infront, my 240s has a nice 'solo' sound.

Hope are good but ROYCE are better 😀 even louder 😈

I like clicky rear hubs, G/f hates them. I just replaced her XTR free hub on her race bike and she gone spare due to it been to noisy! 👿
to be fair it is one of the noisest Shimano free hub I have heard!

Hope bulb, the pro 2 is just attention seeking and if you have a hangover and don't want to pedal too much it just drives you crazy.

The springs are also crap on the pro 2 and go all the time, they're not expensive to replace but it's a pain changing them.

Wierdos.

I like silent hubs. (neerrr)

And a freewheel that sounds like a hamster that's fallen off it's wheel and it's teeth are grating as the wheel continues to spin.

If anyone has a youtube clip of THAT I'll be amazed.

I've just built a new pair using Pro 2's, but would MUCH rather be listening to a DT 240. Such a nice sounding hub without being too loud

Yes actually. I typed your theories into a Speak and Spell and recorded the result. I listen to it in the car as it keeps me awake. It sounds like Stephen Hawking which makes it more believable and funnier at the same time.

My first experience of Hope 2 Pros just now (fitted yesterday) - very impressive but need to get used to the sound. I think I like it...

This brings us onto the next question...................

Oil or grease on the pawls?

Grease makes even hopes silent, oil is nice and clicky, might use EP90 next time and get the best of both worlds.
