[#2822108]

I'm travelling from manchester to scotland next weekend on my own, partly to camp but mainly to ride a couple of the stanes.

i've done kirroughtree so wanted to do a couple of days riding with a decent campsite to boot.

What i'm after:

• as much red/black singletrack as poss, as little fireroad as possible
• 2/3 trails for the two days, i'm getting older so more than that is pushing it
• a really decent campsite, not hundreds of rows of tents and vans, nice small site, few pitches, maybe a stream, you get the picture

do i go to glentress and innerleithen or maybe dalbeattie and mabie?!

recommendations please?!
thanks

OK everyone else will say GT/Inners for the black stuff cause there is`nt much at Mabie/Dalbeattie/Ae or Drumlanrigg but.....

You can cycle into Dalbeattie from either and add the coastal path trail onto the route for a decent day out.

thanks trekster. I was thinking Mabie/Dalbeattie but heard so much about GT/Inners that I didn't want to miss out?!

What are people's views on mabie/dalbeattie or GT/Inners for singletrack?

I'd seen that campsite you mentioned, also this one:

anyone stayed at both?! recommendations?
cheers

Was at the western 7 Stanes last weekend, Dalbeettie has loads of fireroad so you may not like it. In order of preference I'd say:
Kirroughtree (fantastic singletrack, fairly tough, I was sh*t on McMoab and the climb (read push) after McMoab wasn't nice)
Ae (great fun, lots of drops and berms)
Drumlandrig (boring at first but really nice woodland singletrack once on the black, you need to be happy with riding roots)
Mabie (it was wet so not a very fair comparison but apart from a couple of sections it was a little dull)
Dalbeatie (Road it twice as I though being tired from the drive up meant I was off form the first time but I just didn't get on with it. Far too much fireroad and the singletrack doesn't have much flow to it.)

I've done GT/Inners before and next time I go up I will do GT,Inners for the first half of the trip then Kirroughtree, AE, Drumlandrig for the second

thanks cheers_drive,

getting slightly put off going to dalbeattie and mabie now!!

any decent campsites like i'd mentioned around GT/Inners?

As you can probably tell, i don't get to go as often as I'd like to so I need to make the most of it!
thanks

People complain about the fireroad at Dalbeattie but then they are the ones that who have never gone exploring. Same for Mabie too - Mabie is littered with top singletrack and you can ride there for a good few hours looping around, ending on their mini 4x track for some jumpy bermy fun. 🙂

Drumlanrig is old school but top class all the way around, and Ae is going through a revamp, making it less of a slog. Also, you can actually add to the red the DH red too, which is do-able on a HT and can be ridden as both an all out DH track, or a fun filled black addition to the red.

I'd personally do Mabie on the first morning, Drumlanrig in the afternoon, before heading to Inners on Sunday. If you're still feeling good then a quick blast round the nice smooth blue at Glentress would round the weekend off nicely.

As for camping if you're not bothered about facilities then I'd just pitch up somewhere along the B709 as there's some nice quiet spots, a nice stream and great views.

there is a 7 hour race on at GT on sat so you may want to go there on sun although i don't think it will actually affect the trails much parking may be limited.
