For the last week or so whenever i try to look at the website via the homepage url i get this-
Fatal error: Cannot access empty property in /home/s/i/singletrackworld/public_html/wp-includes/user.php on line 584
i can go straight to the forums(usually) but home page is a no no!
anybody else having the same problem?

have you tried clearing your history inc cookies, sessions, files etc - perhaps its an old dodgy cookie? I'm guessing you can log in ok? wp-includes/user.php looks like its related to the login system used in wordpress - Have you tried a different browser i.e. IE vs Firefox vs Chrome vs Safari?
