is this a bad idea?
Picked up a new Helly Hanson ski/snowbaord jacket cheap at the charity shop which looks really nice. Don't want to wear my cycle jackets as they do not look as trendy and regularly get mud all over them.
Seems quite waterproof, it's warm and breathable. Just need to look good in town.
Any views?
Put it on and run to the end of the street.
Let us know how you get on 😉
it's not too warm.
pics please
If you're trying to sweat-off a few pounds it'll be a great idea 😀
it's not that padded really. Do no think it's going to be too warm. so there
thanks everyone. I'll test to see if it's too warm. Do not think it will be though. I can just wear a t shirt underneath, without layers. 😉
If it's not too warm for cycling then it sounds like a crap ski jacket.
This thread is useless without pics
Jeez. Wear it, if it works out fine, keep wearing it, if it doesn't, don't.
Are you in Verbier?
yeah, i board too so i can always use it for that too.
If it’s not too warm for cycling then it sounds like a crap ski jacket.
Depends, if it's insulated then may be, but if it's a shell they're not meant to keep you warm.
I agree with the above. If it’s not too warm for cycling it’s a crap ski jacket.
Major caveat of ‘depends how hard you’re working’ and exceptions for situations like fatbiking in Frozen tundra etc, but for a typical UK domestic commute then anything much warmer than a decent well breathing soft shell will be horrendous. My usual winter commute jacket is a PX Hydrosphere... And honestly on most mornings I just wear a long sleeve Decathlon winter running top. When wearing the PX jacket I’d wear a light running tee.
If you’re pedalling at any sort of intensity it’s only cold for the first minute or so...
I do a very short commute from Buchanan bus station in Glasgow over to the university in the West end. It's only about 3 miles and generally takes about 10 minutes or so on a big, heavy NextBike. Throughout most of the winter, I'll do that with an old snowboard jacket on, generally with just a t-shirt underneath. Only time I heat up is climbing my nemesis, that frikken Gilmore hill....but it's going to be the end of me no matter what I'm wearing at the time.
The snowboard jacket's warm, waterproof, highly visible and keeps me toasty for the rest of my commute as I bus it into Glasgow. I wouldn't worry about the fashion police on here. Just give it a go and see what you think. I won't laugh at you. :-*
Who’s bothered about fashion? I’d melt if I tried a jacket like that!
Where you are and what you’re riding will make a big difference though. If you already have the jacket, try it and see.
thanks everyone.
I would suggest a donkey jacket and safety boots.
i like the look of the donkey jackets. Think i'll be sticking to my casual look though.
Boil in the bag springs to mind. You want to be a little cold setting off, and not overheating whilst riding.
thing is when i am in town too i do not want to get chilled. I will try it soon. I can always go but to my dare2b shell jacket.
I thought a proper down jacket was the correct attire?
Certainly is for walking from your car in to the pub around our way
What do "Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble, Grubb" think about it? 🙂
I often commute in a bonded hoodie.
I have a Bonfire one for snowboarding but it doubles up nicely for winter.
