[Closed] Waterproof jacket is Gore the only Real option?

My faithful trusty Gore jacket has finally surrendered after more than 5 years in all manner of wetness. Thing is I got it at a good price and don't really fancy the eye watering cost of its replacement . I read good things about Alturas Mayhem for £90 and Endura a lot dearer . I also saw someone impressed with a Sombrio offering for £60 on CRC .So what's the scores on the doors people?

If you hunt around, you can find Gore at semi-reasonable prices. Best bet is to Google but here's a couple:

Seek out a Bontrager eVent packable. Top jacket, far better* fabric than Gore.

*I know, I know...!

Waterproof is easy.

Waterproof, breathable, good fit, well made, long-lasting..... I'm still a Gore fan for those reasons. The latest GoreTex Active Shell really is very, very good. Much better than Paclite and at least as good as eVent (I do own jackets of all three materials)

i wouldn't want to bike in a paramo velez unless it was seriously cold.

Event is a material well worrh looking at. Many companies make stuff out of it.

Wiggle Sale: Path, Contest, Oxygen all reduced to around the 100-120 mark. Even the £220 Alp X GT 2.0 AS is only £165.

Another eVent fan here - far prefer my current eVent jacket to any Gore ones I've had.

You've used the new Gore-Tex Active Shell, right?

True. Penny did not drop that it was for cycling as I have gone away from using gortex/ event jackets in favour of more packable and breathable alternatives. Currently have the Montane Singletrack which is good. They do a few different versions in the same pertex material.

What's wrong with you current jacket?
Gore fabrics are actually guaranteed for life, so if you can find any signs off delamination of the fabric I would look at sending it back,
I come from a sailing background and have returned 4 year old musto jackets that are made with gore fabrics and been given brand new ones under warranty
You pay a higher price for brands using gore fabric, and there are cheaper cloths that are just as good, but with a guarantee like that its worth paying that little extra in the first place, IMO

Karrimor eVent jacket for £100 (the hood rolls away and is not noticeable, but is great for stops and puncture fixing etc)

Mine has been out in some hideous weather this year and performed better than any Gore jacket I've used.

I also have the karrimor event jacket and it's fine. Been out in lashing rain and it was fine.

If you want Gore Bike stuff also look at sportsshoes.com as they have the Gore Path 2 for £99.99, and a few Gore other bits. I have been looking for a jacket for my commute as I have shrunk from when I bought my Altura jacket and it's now a bit tent like, hence my interest.

I had one of the old Gill eVent jackets and that was great, so I can recommend eVent as a fabric. I tried on one of the Karrimor jackets but felt it was a little short in the body for me in one size and too baggy next size up, I thought it looked a great bit of kit so was gutted about that.

If you're looking for an alternative to gore, I really like my omm shell jacket. Lightweight, waterproof breathable and 'stretchy' so is very comfortable to ride in. It uses Gelanots Fabric - which I had never heard of, but seems to work really well, kept me dry in some horrible weather for the last couple of years!

Intersting this as I find my old gore goretex jacket more waterproof and breathable than my new dhb event

Funny - Gelanots is like the "unknown/unsung" hero of the waterproof fabric world. I have a Kamleika but, being all black, it's never used for biking.

I bought the event OMM jacket instead of the gelanotts. The fabric is too lightweight and its got a few bits on the inside that have worn through the Inner scrim where my bum bag goes after only a few long runs

Could anyone with the Karrimor please advise what the fit is like for cycling, as it does not seem to have a "longer back" like many cycling jackets do?

Love my Gore windproof (even though the zip broke) but have a Montane eVent waterproof which performs amazingly.

I've been using GoreTex for over 20 years and still have 20 year old jackets which are waterproof. Not tried eVent, but for longevity and easy of maintenance (I just bung my jackets in the wash at 40C with biological powder), you'd struggle to beat GTX.

do you have to keep using the proofer sprays/washing powder to re-proof it?

I have a sprayway with their Hydro/DRY membrane, and it was great until i washed it, now i keep needing to reproof it.

Personally I've not treated my Goretex stuff any different to normal clothes and they've held up fine over years of use and abuse. Hence why I only buy Goretex as it's pretty hard to damage.

Endura Flyte for me - very waterproof but very hot as well as there's no vents.

Perfect when it's below 5º with just a baselayer but any warmer than that it get a bit too much for me anyway.

Altura Attack for me, the only bummer is that when I had my new Osprey pack and put the water cover over it, the pull tab on the back pack wore away the inner lining of my jacket before abraiding my flesh and I realised all was not well. Back of the jacket knackered!!! Osprey owners beware!!!
I had a Gill eVent as my first non Gore jacket and much preferred that non damp feeling of moisture transfer. The mosit air passes through as air as opposed to Gore passing it through as fluid.
Since Gores strangle hold on the patent has expired there are many many more similar fabrics at much better prices and some at better performance.
I too tried riding in my Velez adventure light and its still wayyyy to warm for biking.
Finally in support of Gore over some other jackets, a lot of the time you can tumble dry them, the Alturas you have to leave to drip dry which is pants in this weather.
Not much help really, am I!

It's all marketing bullshit! The best chance you have of staying dry and breathable is to stay indoors with the windows open! Hope this helps.

I bought the new altura mayhem, took it out last Saturday up the lakes in driving rain, I was damp underneath after 3 hours of driving rain but so was my mate with his gore alp x.

It is a little warm on climbs but I'm more happy with it plus it's a great it for biking.

All much of a muchness imho, have a Gill eVent one I use mostly for cycling and a few different Gore ones (triple layered Arcteryx Alpha, Paclite shell, 'milspec' jackets and trousers) and apart from the different 'weights' of jacket they all seem to perform the same. I just wear different ones depending on how active I'm going to be or how foul the weather is.
Interestingly the Arcteryx is the only one I've had problems with; patches of delaminating of the fabric. It's just gone back under warranty. Don't pay £600 for a jacket for it to fail within a year!

I had my Gore jacket professionally re-'waterproofed' last year, is yours beyond repair?

Just bought and tried an altura mayhem, 2nd choice to be honest, actually wanted the enduara mt500 jacket but they were out of stock until march, but was impressed yesterday with the mayhem, quite a bit of climbing on a local loop and I wasnt cooking the way I usaully did in my endura flyte.
