As luck would have it, I have a nice selection of products from those nice people at Grangers, and it's time to reproof my bike and ski kit.
However, which is best? Wash in, or spray on? To date, I've used spray on, but now I've got both, I just wondered if there was a concensus on which is more effective? Fixed fabrics, by the way (event, Gore, HiVent and Eider's own stuff)
wash in.
& the name doesnt have an 'I' in, whereas my surname does.
Both, wash in then spray on.
If I had to choose one I'd always go wash in, it's more convenient and more thorough.
Does wash in not also waterproof the inside of a jacket??

What CH said IMO of course it is STW...
It doesn't waterproof anything, it adds/rebuilds the finish which helps water bead off the jacket.
If you sweat that much then you'd have a problem, not with the jacket though.
how doies it know not add to the inside tho?
Maybe the inside surface isn't designed for the DWR to bond to it? Maybe it does bond to it and if you don't scrub it off you'll drown in your own sweat?
I'm a spray on. After washing - Nikwax.
Wash In (and that's a recommendation from Wales - we know about waterproofing here ...)
Oh, and clean them first ... not that I'm implying that someone as dapper as you would be wandering around in grubby gear ๐
Sue, my bike kit is filthy! ๐ I've got a 30 degree cleaner, too.
Outside in Calver said spray on to paclite etc as it will clog up the breathability (as did endura re the stealth)
Filthy kit is always better than pristine and clean - at least it means you're out there using it!
Anyway, you're talking to the kind of girl who prepares for a date by washing the worse of the mud of my waterproofs ๐ณ
(Paramo BTW - only the best for dating ...)
eVent stuff and other highly breathable fabrics you'd wash with Nikwax Techwash and Reproof with Nikwax TX-Direct spray on.
For less breathable fabrics like Goretex (not the new Active Shell) you'll wanna wash with Techwash and then proof with TX-Direct wash in.
Tumble dry on low in either case. The theory is that you really don't want put a DWR on the inside if you can help it as it effects breathability of the garment which is the real benefit of eVent or Active Shell. Applying a DWR maintenance to the inside of regular Goretex, apparently, doesn't affect performance as the breath ability really isn't up there.
I'd be surprised if the garment manufacturer doesn't have advice on this; I know Rab does.
