i run 8 speed shimano sora on my old touring bike.

i know you can run mini vee brakes with the sora brake levers. mini vees are 85mm long.    is there any reason why you cant run normal vees at 105mm  ?    surely it would just require less power through the lever ?

anyone please ?

They would need to be set up impossibly close to the rim and would be incredibly spongy. Also very sensitive to pad wear. They would probably be very powerful though!

I run 84mm TRPs with modern Shimano levers (more cable pull) and even these are on the cusp of being too close to the rim, I've completely bottomed the lever out in the course of a muddy 80km ride.

I run Shorty Ultimate cantilevers now and they're much better, great.lever feel, good pad clearance, reasonable power.

You can get little pulleys ('travel agents') which would make your levers work with Vs but they're surprisingly expensive for what they are, I think £25 per adapter last I checked...

They do work fine.

Yes. lever throw is increased. And also f you set them up so the pads sit as close to the rim as possible they're very powerful.

You may or may not like this. Nothing to lose by trying.

Shorty Ultimates are worlds different in my experience, but tricky to find at anything other than full (eye watering) RRP.

I fell for some AliExpress knock-offs which didn't even fit over the posts on my frame, lesson learned 😂

It's a cliche but good pads (Swissstop BXP) and careful cable setup makes a world of difference, there's a reason I run cantilevers by choice!

Regular V-brakes need a longer cable-pull than a regular road brake - unless set very close, you'll run out of lever pull before you get full brake power. TRP CX9 mini-vees or the cheaper Tektro versions are optimised for Shimano road lever pull - I'm still running some on the rear of one of my bikes.

Ton I've got some Tektro RX6s you can have for the cost of postage, they're slightly less fancy CX-9s basically and will work better with road levers than full length V-Brakes

Just for clarity, Tektro and TRP are the same Company.

‘Travel Agent’ type adapters work best to make sure non-V brake levers work best.

Fitted these to older cylco-cross and drop bar tourers for friends.  Often after the v-brakes were fitted by my friends without the Travel Agent type adapters.

i recommend that type of adapter.
