Can anyone advise on this matter please. If I buy a 2nd hand bike from someone in the EU will I have to pay Import duty and/or VAT?

I can’t seem to get my head around the rules.

even if it were brand new, if it’s from inside the EU there is no VAT or duty to pay. Same is true for second hand.

EU - Nothing on import, you pay the VAT in the seller's country as if you bought it there. Unless you are VAT registered when it gets tricky and you venture into the realms of reverse charges...

Secondhand. No VAT, unless the seller is VAT registered and reclaimed it on purchase when the above applies.

.

Assuming you are a non-VAT registered individual buying from another such in another EU country then nothing to pay.

.

No import duties between EU states regardless.

Indeed, in EU it's like we're all in one big country. You've paid the VAT in country of origin, and you're not importing from outside EU so no duty.

Also means you won't get rip off handling fees from courier to collect the money.

Until Brexit. Then it's like importing from US. Price inc shipping + VAT + duty (duty varies depending what you import) + handling fee.
