New boy alert !!

Has any one ever upsized a chainring before purely with the intention of reducing freewheel teeth wear?

My commute to work is along an old canal tow path, its 5 miles and dead flat. I find I’m usually motoring along in 20or21 of my 21 gears and have worn through a couple freewheels due to constantly using the smallest cog a lot.

If I upsize my chainring I presume the wear on the freewheel cogs will be less as more teeth are engaged in the chain.

Is this correct or am I barking up the wrong tree?

I need to replace the existing chainrings and chain anyway so am not bin’ing a perfectly good groupset

yes the wear does go down, but whether you can get a difference i am not so sure. if your running a single fixed and going from 22x11 to 66x33 then you may actually see a difference.

Ask for part-used 11T and 12T sprockets on the classifieds.

We all end up binning cassettes with a spider when the 20/21T is scrap, so end up with a box of the smaller ones, mostly unused.

Or, work out the gear ratio (I bet it is not 42/44 with 11/12) and use your existing kit in a different way.
