Hi,

I have the standard deore brakes in my lappiere zesty, Im looking at brake upgrades and essentially i wondered how much of a difference upgrading levers make, because if they don't its significantly cheaper to just get the callipers rather than both.

It might be easier to simply increase the rotor size if you're after more power. Otherwise it depends. I've mixed and matched quite a few Shimano levers and calipers over the years and mostly the swapping the lever has made the most difference, but it's going to depend on the specific levers and calipers. You may also need to facor in new hoses.

Deore brakes on 203mm / 180mm rotors are pretty effective ime if that's what you're after.

I would also say, Deores (depending on age/model) are cracking brakes, and you can spend significant sums of money to achieve less of an upgrade than you might think...You can get more power with more DH orientated brakes, you can get less weight with XC brakes - but rarely both without spending dafty money.

As BWD says, upsize rotors should work well.

I'd say it's fairly pointless upgrading just the calliper as most of the trickery (Servo Wave etc) is in the lever. The new SLX stuff looks lovely and has all the bells and whistles.

Deores have a different different hose fitting at the caliper than SlX and above so youd also need to change the hose, not worth it
