I have a late 2000's RL Team Tig Sl. It has been well used but it still has all of the original gear on it. I really like the feel of the RL but I have not owned or had the opportunity to ride many other bikes. I have used the bike for general rides and, this year, entered into a XC race. I enjoyed the race but 2 hours in the 6 year old bottom bracket snapped and other components are starting to get a bit worn.
So, do I:
keep the RL and upgrade all of the bits? (I would probably have to get my LBS to build the bike for me as I don't have all of the required tools)
Purchase a new bike? I really like the On-one whippet and the 456 but I am unlikely to be able to try before I buy. My LBS sells CUBE, Specialized and Scott so would I would be interested to hear any recommendations on these brands.
Thanks for your help.
I'd get some nice wheels and other gear for your existing frame.
after a while when the bug bites again, get a new frame (maybe a FS frame you could swap all your kit over too).
my LBS charge around 30-40 quid for building bikes up (that usually includes cables).
p.s. I have a rocklobster sl (which I plan to build back up soon)
there ave been a few posts recently about rocklobsters.
I personally don't think you'll gain much changing to another 100mm xc frame, maybe a steel frame would be a noticeable change?
if you intend to race you could build the lobster back up to be a really light bike.
I believe theres a sale on the whippets at the mo too.
As sefton, get some really nice lightweight wheels, tyres and good quality forks. Nice light wheels don't have to cost a fortune these days and you can fit all that yourself, then go from there.
