we have some repairs in our shop approaching 6 months which the customers seem unwilling to collect for whatever reason. How long do we have to wait before selling the bikes to reclaim the costs of the repairs?

Call them and inform them of the fact, give them 2 weeks, then sell.

What does it say on your service tag/conditions?

Last time I left a bike in for repair I was given a receipt that included charges for storage and, I think, saying how long until it was disposed off.

If you haven't agreed a time limit that I'd say six months

When I had a shop I would make sure I kept a record of when and how the customer was informed that the bike was ready for collection which was usually a minimum of twice. then I would dispose of or sell the bike after three months. I had a very large shop so space was not too much of an issue.

We used to stipulate it on the receipt, 3 months then it'd be sold. We only had to do it once, we'd call them every month to remind them and explain we were charging them storage on it too.

Isnt it a year legally? I remember being told that by a Halfords manager when I worked there but I might be wrong.

theres the problem, 9 times out of 10 we have contact details but on this one he didnt take the number so we havent been able to contact the guy, apart from the recriminations against the mechanic ( hes on tea duty for the rest of the year) we are not sure what to do. We use the standard Raleigh service cards and they dont say either way so we are a bit stuck. We are starting a storage charge but as we are a small shop we dont want to get arsey with our customers 🙂

Trading Standards might be able to advise on the legal side?

I always give them one month then phone every few days, leave messages etc, and if they still dont collect I then phone them and tell them I am selling the bike or throwing it out for the scrapmen....they come asap then !

we have it on our cards

£5 per day after 1 week...so far never had to claim the £5's
