[Closed] [Tyres] Which large, tubeless ready rear tyre for my HT

I stuck a Hans Dampf up front last week and was pretty impressed, lots of volume and quicker than the ST HR it replaced. Took a look at my Mud-x on the rear an noticed it's worn down much more than I'd realised.

I stuck it on in winter and it's been pretty good, but I fancy something a bit faster rolling/more capable all round. I found the mud-x a bit lacking in volume though, so I'm looking for something tubeless ready for out back which is decent all round and rolls fairly well. Not sure I want to spend £45+ on another Hans Dampf for the rear.

Any suggestions? Nobby Nic maybe?

Have a look at the new Bontrager tlr tyres; decent volume size - Evans at Nottm were selling the old xr4 off for £20 about a month ago.

Bonty XR4 2.35" - quick, light for its size, stacks of grip and cheap at £20.

Specialized Eskar2? I've got one on the front at the moment with a2.35 high roller (single play 60a) on the back. Or for more mixed/muddy use try a purgatory. All three work fine tubeless.

Wouldn't get a nic. I have one on the rear with a dampf on the front. The centre tread has been ripped to pieces pretty quickly with just surrey hills riding so not exactly tough on tyres. Ardent 2.4? Meant to be good as a rear tyre and rolls pretty well from what i understand. They're not tubeless ready but i believe its accepted that you have no issues running standard maxxis tubeless for some reason.

The 2.25 Nobby Nics are way smaller than 2.35 Hans Dampf. I got a few pinch punctures with the Nics (despite tubeless), no such problems with the Hans Dampf. No idea re: 2.40 Nics.

Agree on the wear rate though - my Hans Dampfs are only 2 months old and they're already at least half worn.

I'll probably try Conti Mountain Kings next, although I hear they're quite porous and difficult to seal. Still on the hunt for the idea tubeless tyres 🙄

I want to avoid Maxxis, the reason I'm running the Hans Dampf up front is my old HR popped off the rim, deflating completely on a descent.

Can anyone comment on the Bonty XR4s size compared to say a mux-X 2.0, highroller 2.35 or Hans Dampf 2.35? I hears the're quite big.

I'll take a look at the Eskar/Purgatory too.

What kinda terrain do you ride predominantly? I've got an On One Smorgasbord tyre I'm selling as though it works amazingly on hardpack and rock, most of my riding is in woods and on soft dirt where it doesn't work as well as a Rubber Queen or other tyres I normally use. It's a 26x2.25" Maxxis casing, which works tubeless very easily. Really quick rolling, high volume tyre too.

Sounds like I ride the same terrain as you mboy. Thanks for the tip choron. HD 2.35 is big though, maybe too big on the back?

Gah. Bloody tyres.

I wouldn't go for a MK if you like the Hans Dampf, then either another one on the rear,or a Rubber Queen, the German sites have the best prices.

The bonty's are big volume but i liked the one i used on the back of my 456. Seemed to clear mud reasonably well even though the tread pattern doesn't imply that it will. In fact for £10 + postage you can have it? Not sure its specified as tubeless but can check tonight and take a photo if you want. It's only surplus to requirement as i'm 29er only now.

Xr4 team tlr 2.1 (or was it 2.2? Smaller one anyway) is a good size and volume. Next one up is huge.

This is not true of the xr3 2.1 tlr team which I ran on the back but was very similar to mudx in size and vol - but felt nice and fast. Love mudx as intermediate to wet mud times though.

Xr4 2.1 front and xr3 2.3 rear tubeless for the win 🙂 similar volumes but drifts and sticks like Star sky..
