I'm riding Llandegla tomorrow and would appreciate some advice on tyre choice. My Zesty is currently shod with Conti Racekings which are great on the hard packed local trails but I don't know what conditions are like at Llandegla.

Got some High Rollers and Swampthings knocking about if they're worth swapping over.

The trails at Llandegla are actually quite smooth. On a dry day you can get away with a very fast rolling rear tyre. There is only one rocky section on the entire black trail. If you have single ply high rollers then sticking one on the front wont be a bad idea for a bit extra in the turns.

Hope this helps and that you enjoy your first time there. The chips from the cafe are some of the best I have ever had!

Stick the highrollers on. Llandegla has had a fair bit of rain in the past few days are in for a deluge tomorrow. Most of the track drains well and is fast rolling but there are some muddy and slippy spots.

Race King on the back - a bit of grip on the front.

The steep ups are pretty grippy asnd a bit more grip on the front inspires confidence for berm based tomfoolery.

I use 2.25 Snakeskin Racing Ralph front and rear there, there's no need for massive grippy tyres as there's nothing for them to grip to anyhow as it's so hard packed. even in the heavy rain it doesn't really get muddy....

I run a NN up front and a RR out back, so maybe the RK out back and the HR up front

Any tyre will do, but some do it better than others ! The best I have found so far at Llandegla are Black Chili Rubber Queens. The other thing that makes a big difference on hard pack like Llandegla, is tyre pressure. Now running 22-23 psi front, 31-33 rear. Whatever you run, just ride within its limits of grip, and enjoy the place. Its not technically challenging, but you can't help enjoying it ( a bacon and egg bap at the cafe when you finish will only enhance the experience ) enjoy 😉

What's Llandegla like for hills? Is it SS friendly?

You'll get round but it ain't flat. 1 good long flattish fire road climb for a start and then lots of shortish steeper climbs later in the loop.

You're not supposed to want to ride Llandegla, let alone wonder what tyres to use. It's not "gnarly" enough to be enjoyable, you see 😉

why does everyone have to snipe at people who want to do Llandegla?? It's one of the best trail centres in the UK, the track is impeccably maintained and the facilities are A1. Yes it's a 'manufactured' trail but it does a great job of giving people somewhere to ride, try new skills and is pretty predictable in all weathers.

I got into MTB'ing 18 months ago and I used to go there weekly and the first time I went I could barely do the blue route without vomitting and I soon built up my fitness which it's great for. Yes the halfords massif get there on their £99 bikes but my first bike was £300 and now have £6k worth so maybe Llandegla is the first rung on the ladder for MTB'ers??

The first 2.5 miles are a long manageable drag but then it depends on which route. The blue which is actually quite entertaining is a deffo on an SS, the red route has 'the double steep' which has most geared riders pushing up and there's a few smaller ones near the end which would be challenging.

The Black route continually descends (via lots of berms, table tops etc 8) ) to the bottom of the forrest and then there is some climbing back out via switchbacks, but manageable if your fit enough. Personally I'd go geared.......

with regards to tyres, don't worry about mud, there isn't any at all, the surface will be wet in lots of places but the whole trail is really hard underneath and drains really well. They've re-laid the trails in lots of places and it's very smooth at the minute even when wet. It didn't trouble me on ardent and crossmark set up

Llandegla's ace if you want some uncomplicated riding that'll make you smile, go really rather fast and inadvertently wind up off the ground more than usual. As the OP above said it's not technically demanding but if it's berms and really great flow on all weather surface you're after this place is hard to beat. Plus Ian and Jim are really nice folk and for all this fun it's a grand total of £3.50 to park.

It's fab for what it is - if you want more gnarr type activity take a map aund use the caff as a post ride treat/ tie some natural trails in with the Black bits. Ride over World's End and go frolic on some natural trails before returning to the caff.

I really don't get this Llandegla bashing at all. Unless it's purposefully ironic, in which case I'll get my coat.....

I think it's ace too, and I'm not being ironic.

It's just great fun, fast and flowy. The skills bit is ace for messing about on at the end, as is the pump track.

What's not to like?

I'm local and only ride there on weekdays after work, the place is nuts on the weekends and I avoid at all costs, There Is much better riding In the area anyway. What tyres..............same as anywhere else really.

Hope you enjoy your ride, Don't listen to the the usual tripe that Llandegla Is flat and boring. It's just good fun.

I find it difficult to understand why anyone would drive through Shropshire past so many 1st class trails (some even are signposted) to get to Llandegla.

I wouldn't say it's one of the best trail centres in the UK, it is a lot of fun though IMHO. Well worth a trip for something a bit different.
I'd go for fast rolling rear and grippy front btw. 😀

I live locally to Llandegla and ride it most weeks and I really enjoy it. Usually do the red and black circuits on a SS (32:18) although I do the red pretty regularly on a CX.

As for tyres, anything which holds air in really! Usually NN/RR all year round.

For me Llandegla is only an hour away.

Its a great blast and has helped with improving my fitness, ok may not be the most technical of places. The red route is really good fun with the option of the black route.

But with the skills area, pump track has put life back into the place, even if the 2 mile climb is a bit monotonous.

So as for your tyre choice, go with something fast rolling, and the cafe at the end of the ride has some great food for refuelling.

I wasn't having a go at anybody for riding Llandegla, having been there a number of times myself. The point I was making is that tyre choice is not really a great concern there. Asking the question was the new low.

FFS. Just ride your ****ing bike.

Llandegla is great imo, but I can't honestly believe people really think about their tyre choices for each ride/location and change accordingly. Unless you're racing it strikes me as incredibly anal and pointless. Each to their own and all that but really......

Ah, the welcoming atmosphere of STW strikes again. I always find it funny that some one who comes onto a MTB forum and asks a MTB related question can get such abuse!

sorry AndyHilton, but you did come across as an arse in your first post, so dont get arsey that it has been mentioned.

I dont see any issue with asking about tyre choice, I feel a big difference between hard pack tyres and mud tyres, and a bit of advice on the terrain to make an informed decision beforehand seems sensible to me.

how the **** that is incredibly anal and pointless is beyond me?... making the negative comment is more anal.

JUst got back from riding Llandegla...and thoroughly enjoyed both the ride and the company.

Why did I ride Llandegla.....because I was invited to by one of my clients, a thoroughly decent chap who picked up the car parking costs for about 20 of us...and when the ride had finished he's arranged for a BBQ at the cafe...a very fine spread indeed. He even brought a couple of cases of beer from the boot of his car. Never ridden with any of the lads before but we had plenty of good banter too.

That's why I drove past many of the other possible venues in Shropshire!!

I took the geared bike and glad I had too, there are plenty of hills and having had some inury time off the bike I think I'd have struggled on the SS.

I rode on the Racekings in the end, spent too much time getting my haircut this morning and meeting mate for coffee and didn't have time to put a HR on the front. The front slipped a couple of times after the heavy rain but nothing too slippy.

Thanks for all the helpful posts.....those who disagree with my choice of venue or debate over tyres, why don't you just trot on and live your own lives....try offering something positive instead of being a c0ck!

The thing about tyre choice for different locations that gets me is, rather than being an 'odd' choice, isn't it actually the worst thing you could do?
By which I mean, I ride the same tyres wherever I'm riding simply because I know them - I know where they'll grip, I know where they'll let go - so I have predictability and control over the bike. That way I ride smoother and quicker.
If I'm riding different tyres every weekend, the ride characteristics change each time I ride and therefore I lose that deep feel for the handling you get from riding regularly, which ultimately gives you control, flow and speed...

try this method:
take a step back, deep breath, and open your mind.

re-read the original post with said open mind

re-read your original posts, trying to take on board how your tone may be percieved

ponder why people may suggest your negativity is not warranted.

realise you may just have been said 'cock'.

move on.

Andyhilton - you are wrong.

The new low you speak of would be a thread entitled "What tyre pressure for Glentress?", after experiencing a rider there adjusting their tyres after each section depending on whether they would be climbing or descending.

I agree though, one set of tyres for anything.

I am in the one tyre for all camp, found me some WTB raijin race tyres, they were cheap and light so i thought why not! They have been absolutely brilliant in all conditions so they stay on all the time.

Llandegla for me is excellent, not too challenging, i am not a big jumper anyway and enjoy my riding even when i am not being super rad!
It is only 40 minutes away so i can bomb up there early morning, hack around the black a couple of times and be back for lunch. I like it because it is fast and flowing, like i said, i am poor at jumping but can bomb around the black and not bottle out of any bits so it suits me fine so will suit others.

It really is just a matter of taste and what you prefer.

Slimjim get that automatic tyre pressure adjustment lever, idea patented quick-smart.
Some mountain bikers just love faffing, uppy downy seats, changing tyres for every occasion and swapping pedals.....and if it makes 'em happy ,good for them.
As for Llandegla,it's good fun and the cafe is top notch. Wouldn't bother me if I didn't ride it again tho..

I object to the fact that I am getting the blame for taking too long in cutting your hair that you couldn't change your Tyres!

And I have also witnessed a lad at Kirroughtree on a SC Bullet who kept changing his tyre pressures for each section...

I don't blame you at all...I rather enjoyed the bike banter. In my rush to get out the door though I left the High Roller in the kitchen so couldn't swap it over

its a great little trial centre - easy to get to, well looked after and good fun to ride. Nothing really challenging but great fun all the same. I like it. (only been a couple of times though)

I like riding at Llandegla and I dont mind admitting it 🙂
