I have a Whyte T129RS circa 2016. So WTB i23 rims and limited space outback. I have managed to squeeze a DHR2 in which suits me well in most conditions (Devon mixed weather!) but it's now worn out so looking for a replacement. So I need something reasonable chunky and only 2.25 wide, able to shed mud and deal with classic UK conditions.

Any bright ideas, or am I stuck with DHF/DHR2?

I'd stick with a DHR2 purely from a performance point of view.

There’s no tyre I’d rather be stuck with on the back than a DHR2 2.3 dual compound - I’ve got tons of space on my hardtail and still run it.

I tried the 2.4 but it added so much more drag for the small amount of extra grip. And I used the Minion SS for a couple of summers but the small amount of extra speed didn’t justify the hassle of swapping or the reduced braking grip on the steep loose stuff.

Other suggestions from the LBS are Forekaster 2.2 or Ardent 2.25. Both quicker, lower profile tyres. My mate runs Forekaster 2.35 and gets on OK - wonder what the real sizes are for the 2.35 and the 2.2

DHR2 in which suits me well in most conditions

Sounds like you've got your answer.

Forekaster is tiny in 2.2, I run them on my XC bike in wet. Ardent 2.25... not as good for 'all condidtions' riding, but great when it's dry.

The grass isn't always greener - the DHR2 is a brilliant rear tyre that I always come back to.

Just changed from a DHR2 to Forekaster and the Forekaster is noticably faster and lighter with great all round grip. Had an Ardent 2.25 before which was even quicker but with less grip on loose stuff. I'd only go back to a DHR2 if I really needed the grip.

The narrower Ardent is pretty rubbish in any conditions that aren't bone dry.
I've got a similar age Whyte and the rear clearance in rubbish. I've tried many tyres trying to get one that will fit, and best all-rounder I've found is a Specialized Purgatory 2.3.
It did get a hole pretty fast, but I'm hoping that was just bad luck!
