[Closed] tubeless ghetto - which inner tubes?

seem to remember someone mentioned schwalbe 20" bmx tubes with a removable presta core. is that about right?

thing is.......i just used some stans sealant on my last set of wheels (non ghetto) and seem to remember that the nozzle of the sealant bottle wouldnt fit in the presta valve. too large. and i unseated the bead and poured in and it worked fine.

with this set of wheels theyre non tubeless rims, so im going to have to use the ghetto method. but im thinking if i have to unseat the bead again, surely it matters not which type of valve i use? in fact a schraeder valve would fit through the hole in the rim better, as thats what sort of tubes i was using.

then again i could always use a syringe if thatll fit down a removable core better??

hmmm haaa. what do the stw massive advise?

cheers

Can you actually get Schrader with removeable cores?

i didnt actually mean to remove the schraeder cores tbh 🙂

i was just asking whether it was important to have the removable cores, as the squirty bottle seemed too big to fit in the end of the valve. think the JRA milk bottle has a narrower end and may fit, but stans seems to be the sealant of choice.

so im wondering if theres any problem with unseating bead on the ghetto method. and if not, then i spose any old bmx inner will do. schraeder, presta, removable valve or not :-/

a syringe is better than the bottle thingy, easier to use/more accurate,Schraeder do all have removable cores, and if IRC, Schwalbe are the chaps who do a removable core presta,I've used both types both equally successful.

aaaand who sells those then? 🙂

just done a search and they all seem to be a fiver a pop just about everywhere.
but.... theres different sizes :-/
can i assume that 1 and 1/8 inner tubes will be fine, as ill only end up cutting some off anyway? or do they need to be the same size as the tyres id be using? (2.1)

All shraeder are removable cores and very few presta are. But I've never found a need for removable cores.

I've always just unseated the bead. Works fine.

I use schwalbe bmx inners because they're the only presta-valved ones I can find and because they have a nice lockring with a lip that fits in my schraeder-drilled rims nicely. Never worried about whether or not the core was removable.

I got them from Marshalls when I lived in Hertfordshire and Strada cycles in Bristol. No idea where to get them from now I'm back in Sheffield though...

EDIT - Size wise, the wider the better I reckon, just because it means that if you've got a tight tyre which pulls the inner around a bit, you've got more leeway/more to grab to pull it straight again.

I've used these 20" presta 1.5-2.5 ones before successfully.

Just ghetto'd a new set of wheels on saturday using Schraeder valved Schwalbe BMX tubes from Just Riding Along in Sheffield.

Didn't have a valve core remover so just unseated the bead and poured in the stans sealant.

Seem fine after a good length local ride yesterday, which included several bridleways now covered in hawthorn thanks to the recent hedge trimming!

The same ride last wednesday night gave me 3 punctures!!!!

Looks like you've already found some, but JRA sell the 20" BMX tubes with removable presta cores. As for the nozzle size issue, I have a small JRA wheel milk bottle with a small nozzle which only cost a couple of quid. You can then just decant 50ml (or whatever) of your favourite jizz from a larger bottle into that each time you need to top up.

On that note, and apologies for the hijack, is there a sealant that doesn't clog up as much as the JRA milk? I took a worn tyre off the other day and there were bloody greak hunks of dried up latex all over the place. Is the Stans stuff better?

Used those same innertubes from CRC.

As for the Stans nozzle thing, cut it just enough so it fits tightly over the valve. Then without the core, use it as a funnel, pouring the fluid into it from the measure cup.

Depends on the tyres you use as to whether or not you can just unseat the bead and put some sealant in, or they're too tight so you have to remove the valve core. Anything already designed to be tubeless will be VERY tight, so you'll need to remove the valve cores in my experience.

Oh, and bought my BMX tubes from Sainsbury's for £2 each...

Providing you're careful, yep, not been a problem for me so far. I wouldn't say it's the BEST way, but it works ok IME.

ill try it one way at a time 🙂 first ill see if the schwalbe inners from crc have removable cores. if they do ill try and take em out with a small adjustable. then ill try and either cut the end of the nozzle really small. OR see if i can get some in using a syringe.

if that doesnt seem a goer, then ill unseat bead.

26" tubes for 29" wheels i believe Frankers 🙂

thanks

Valve core remover is about £1.50 from Halfords... A worthwhile investment at less than half the cost of most inner tubes I'd say!

Possibly 24" tubes too I think

The Schwalbe 20" schrader valve tubes i used had a threaded collar to keep the valve from pushing in when you attach a pump.

Nokian DH tubes have a valve core remover in the cap iirc.

I'm guessing that Halfords maybe do cheapest tubes. Often sell 'em as 2 for 3 too. My LBS sells bmx tubes at £4 - thats what i buy + artshop latex.

Fairly easy to remove the core with pliers.
