Writing this with a ringing in my ear.

New wheels and new tubeless tyres. Front didn’t ‘pop’ into the rim but held fine with sealant and has sat without losing any pressure at all for a few weeks.

Test voyage and every time the tyre deformed it lost a bit of pressure, bead obviously not sat on the rim bead. Didn’t push it and just pointless home.

Looked well taped (rear was fine) so tried chucking a few airshot blasts into it and it’s popped off the rim with an almighty bang and painting stans everywhere in the garage.

I take it the tyre is now FUBAR (sigh)? Any pointers as to what went wrong given the rear was fine and I’ve never had an issue taping/tubelessing plenty of other combos?

It was a der baron on i29 rims if that makes a difference.

Thanks
Deafstu

Looking like you have exceeded the max tyre pressure and its popped off.
Try again without sealant and put a bit of soap liquid around the area that wont seal.
Also check tyre to see recommend max pressure.
If all is ok then fill through valve if possible.

Tyre should be fine if it looks fine, I found with some conti tyres I had never banged when seated , ive found some tyre and rim combos just don’t work with tubeless (for me)

U must have exceeded around 60psi for it to bang off, we’ve all done it,
Finally if it doesn’t bang on check the tyre line indicator just above the rim is straight at an even distance all around the rim

Tubless or not some tyre tube combos just don't want to seat. Had some Salsa rims that were a nightmare!!
Washing up liquid is your friend in these situations.

Never had to resort to washing up liquid but definitely will next time. Thanks for the comment

Never had to resort to washing up liquid

It's not a last resort IMO - it's a sensible, routine part of getting the bead to slide smoothly into place reliably and without high pressures/bukkake

As above washing up liquid watered down, seat it before sealant.

Oh and at least you were in the garage. I’ve done it once and I was in the spare bedroom. I now add sealant after seating a new tyre, I’ll let you work out what a mess it caused.

It's when you go back to it and discover the wheel needs retensioned, that's proper tubeless madness. (also heard a boom, went out to the garage, discovered tyre off (fortunately no sealant yet but it was a bloomin expensive fatbike tyre and the bead was broken) and it'd smashed in the side of my bin and poured rubbish everywhere.

+1 to washing up liquid, I have an old Dettol spray bottle with soapy water in and it works very well, quick spray around the bead and I've not had a tyre that won't seat. I've also had times where a tyre seems too baggy like it would would need an extra layer of tape for it to seal, spray some soapy water and it goes straight up.

Same but I use window cleaner.
The pop as the tyre seats is weirdly satisfying!

I always use watered down soap. Never once had a problem with it seating properly.

Bet that shit you up.

I fell off my bloody trainer at xmas when i was JRASS (JRA Staying Still) and my Cx tyre which was newly seated decided to unseat right next to me, shat my pants and FELL OFF IN MY GARAGE. I've only ever had problems with CX tyres on Stans rims. Oh and some MTB ones on DT rims but i gave up on them. Bit of fairy on the bead or even a small wipe of silicon spray on both sides. Quick blast on the compressor and bobs your uncle. Leave it o/night or do a small ride then goop them up.

Less messy than soapy water is Silicon spray lube (plumbing stuff from screwfix is cheapest) wiped around the bead and sidewall. Spray it onto a bit of rag and wipe it round the tyre before you start try to fit it - makes the whole process a lot easier.

Last month, my mate's road bike was inside the office when his tyre exploded at 100psi. Everyone thought someone had been shot.
