i beg to differ as it is mostly about custom bikes as if you read the thread title

But you also said the were 'porn', which is what people are questioning. If you just wanted pics of branded bikes you could have just done a 'show me your x, y ,z' thread 😆

No need to act like a big girl just because you got the title wrong.

trying not to be defensive but when you start a thread requesting something in particular and then people start going off on tangents and dragging me with them then it gets to be a bit of a pain.

It's a forum. That's the nature of it.

haggis1978
i just wanted to see some nice bikes that i like and not have to try and justify them which is what i feel like i am having to do.

No one is asking anyone to justify anything, in the grand scheme of things the "bike porn" that's been posted isn't that expensive, and much of it isn't that nice. Your definition has just inspired debate as to what makes a bike "bike porn", not whether anyone should buy a custom or boutique brand bike. That's all. I posted when I had a look at the thread and it occurred to me there were some pretty bland, even ugly bikes in it, and that my off the shelf full susser would probably be as expensive, faster and more fun on anything other than a fire road. Which got me wondering, and posting.

Imo "bike porn" must surely be something like ( and I mean generally ) the Colnago CF8 or Specialized Mclaren Venge. Ie stupidly expensive, very rare and cutting edge performance. The aesthetics might be marmite but that's not the whole point, they represent bleeding edge performance, form following function and a high degree of unobtainability .

In mtb terms the closest thing would be what?

Did you get those wheels for free?

I just like the strength and stiffness of deep section rims/short spokes compared to wider rims. I'll freely admit they are a bit weighty though, especially with Phil Wood hubs. They work really well in deep mud though.

for a change something nice to say here:
love that '94 Dave Yates Swamp Donki!
Mighty proportions, wonder if it still rode well!?

Didn't know it before, so that was worth reading through this thread alone.
Despite the fatuous feuds between the interesting posts.

Thanks! 🙂

Who's being a taste dictator? Is it the guys implying a bike has to be a skinny tubed hartail made in a shed with some 90's throwback decals and a 4k price tag before it can be considered sexy?

Or the people questioning that?

Ha ha...need to justify your choice? Steve Peat needs skill compensation then?
Ha, your inferiority complex is showing.

At least I have the skills and confidence to make that choice. I don't have to justify it to myself never mind Internet keyboard warriors. And indeed, sometimes I do ride wide bars and longer travel. My world is not black and white.

Steve Peat uses those things to enhance his already not inconsiderable skill. I remember him riding and beating people in a narrow barred Kona hardtail though. What a fatuous non-sequitur you raise.

POSTED 7 HOURS AGO # REPORT-POST

Ha ha, bully for you for having the "skills and confidence" to make that choice 🙄 I didi too with my custom steelHT. My only point was that you were slagging off those with FS, wide bars, etc, now you've backed down to say you love riding yours., but you're still superior because you have the "skill and confidence" to choose/buy something else 😛

Anyway...a Turner Burner "back in the day"?...WTF it came out in 1994, are you some kind of NOO8 ❓

I realised I was being a dick and couldn't construct a decent retort so I thought I'd try and be facetious instead.

Fair enough.

Anybody own a Moots? Always been interested as to how they ride

I owned a Rigormootis many moons ago but found the geometry to be a bit old fashioned.

They have short effective top tube's as standard, for example the 16" which has a 17.27" seat tube only has a 22" effective top tube.

You can get custom geometry, but that is even more £££'s over the standard price.

I think a standard geometry Rigormootis is around £2700.

Fair enough.

I could construct plenty of retorts Sonny Jim.. but to do so would be the intellectual equivalent of kicking a dog turd down the street..

Nothing here is at the cutting edge IMO. If you wanted photos of custom bikes and nothing else why not Google the brands in your post? How dare people come and ruin 'your' thread 🙄

Mighty proportions, wonder if it still rode well!?

Only on early 90's style head-down arse-up friendly XC style race courses. There's too much weight over the front end with that Dave Yates stem. A shorter (80mm) Bontrager quill stem has made it a bit more comfortable. Fat belly gets in the way these days too. The brakes were better than the available options at the time, but TBH even V-brakes outperform them.

you're still superior because you have the "skill and confidence" to choose/buy something else

Have you visited a trail centre lately? Some of them need all the help they can get.

so what Al said!!!

There's no accounting for taste, is there? Surely shouldn't!
We could have enjoyed each others interpretation of what bike porn is, without starting to argue about it.
Then again we obviously couldn't. 😐

Sometimes I think it's all about therapy.
Yes, the internet forum culture is one big therapy of being allowed to argue for the arguments sake, being irrational, being provocative, even pretty dastardly 😯 without civilisation and other spoil sports being too much in the way... for once! What an insight! I've got to write a book about it!

Hope it works! The therapy, I mean. For a better tomorrow! 😀

This thread now reads like the RBS pay thread. Disappointed as I had hoped to see some nice bikes. Live and let live. Post up whatever you think is bike porn!

Was trying to come up with a classic/modern car analogy,
classic looks, expensive, feel nice to ride
vs
cheap, more comfy, efficient, better technology

but there's so many holes I can pick in it I shan't bother.

Some nice looking old bikes here (and some complete mingers too)

and another thing, I don't get the towel rail, is it just for show (in which case, OK fair enough) or is there some reasoning behind it - can't see what considering most bike manage with just a top and a down tube, but would like to hear it.

This thread isn't about custom bikes.

i beg to differ as it is mostly about custom bikes as if you read the thread title, WHICH I STARTED! then you will see these are all custom built bike manufacturers.

i apologise for including my merlin, then, as i had not appreciated the custom element was a requirement.

haggis.

Just bear in mind that some of the people on this thread just want to look at pictures of bikes you see leaning agains a wall at a trail centre cafe. 🙂

They have no interest in anything that's not advertised in MBR/MBUK.

Look at that fillet brazing Deep chain stays and no bridge either.

Choice of paint colour and pattern (or not) is also a personal thing on these sorts of bikes.

I don't get the twin top tube thing myself and I don't expect people to understand my liking of curvy top tubes either.

So I might not buy one, but I can still appreciate the craft that goes into a bike with a "towel rail", and the owners pride.
