Received my new wheels last week, thought they were the dogs danglies, light and tough ("for aggressive trail riders that aren't afraid to take risks and go big"). Well, last night on my usual 'urban MTB' ride (read commute ) I managed to put an almighty ding in the rear rim, riding down a flight of blingin stairs... hardly seems like 'going big' to me! ๐Ÿ˜ก

Anyone else had strength issues with these rims? Or am I just so hardcore that I'm the only one to manage a dent in them? I might add that I've done exactly the same route with my 'old' wheels, DT 4.1 rims (that really do have a rep for being soft) nae problems at all

Any chance of a warranty claim to Spesh do you think? Or do I just have to suck it up? ๐Ÿ˜ฅ

Worrying to hear.

Not had any problems with mine despite some very fast, rocky Lakes riding - but will be sure to keep the tyre pressures up in future after reading this.

Let us know how you get on if you take it to Spesh/shop.

Edit: to say good luck!

tyre pressure was around 60psi (as I was on the tarmac), big fat 2.3 Eskars as well... really disappointed to get this damage tbh. I din't think I hit anything that hard ๐Ÿ™

Interested to know what tyre pressure you were running? Quite fancied some of these wheels.

Oops too late - bloody hell, 60 PSI!!

I think it was around 60psi... I used the LBS track pump the other day and seem to recall going to this... might have been 50psi; either way, tyres certainly weren't soft. Still managed to pinch flat the rear though, maybe I did clip the bottom step harder than I thought ๐Ÿ™

That's hardly the fault of the rim, a dent is going to be caused by you under-inflating the tyre or hitting things too hard!

If they were at 50-60 and you pinch flatted you must've hit them seriously hard!

Wouldn't pinch flatting at 60psi reek of quite extreme whackage for any rim. How is the tyre?

see above for that in English

well if you got a pinch flat its pretty obvious you hit it harder than your old rims so you cant exactly claim the rim is weaker than a DT (arnt the speccy rims made by DT?)

fair enough I guess... but I just find it odd that I've done the exact same run dozens of times with my 4.1's and never had a problem, first time down the stairs with th new rims and bang, it's all over Jerry ๐Ÿ™ just bad luck I guess?

Does a dent in the rim cause issues for tubeless setup etc? should I replace it (for when I do go sans tubes?)

cheers

You could try bending it back out with some mole grips - don't blame me if you cock it up though!

How is the tyre?

the tyre is fine, the tube had two seperate pinch flats. Looking at the rim again, there are actually 2 dings, one big one and then a smaller one about 4" further along... I guess I did hit it hard ๐Ÿ˜ฏ (don't know how or why ๐Ÿ™ )

I always had my doubts that the weight VS strength VS Price claims of these rims could be matched in reality...

maybe I'm being too harsh on them in my title... in hindsight it would seem I did hit a sharp square edge with reasonable force and that's what's caused me grief... probably would've happened to any rim I guess...

There is nothing wrong with my Traversees after a year of abuse (15 stone + trail centres/Quantocks/Mendips), had them on my hardtail and FS to. It does sound like you gave them a fair old whack to snakebite at 50-60psi...

The only issue I have with them is the tubeless rim tape is shite.
